Summary[]
When the players gathered to play the game, Ellen told them that they would roughly follow an adventure that came with her rule book, When Nanase asked why they wouldn't follow it exactly, Ellen explained that the players couldn't be expected to act as they were supposed to.[2] Before the players introduced their characters, Ellen suggested that they should use the players' names for the characters and Nanase introduced herself to Larry.[3]
Rich announced that he would play as a paladin.[4] Larry had decided to play as a bard.[5] George described his character, a sorceress who was lazy because she was born with her magic. Rich objected to him playing as a woman but George glared him down.[6] Larry decided that his bard would also be a woman. Rich again objected and George again glared him down.[7] Ellen was tempted to offer to transform George and Larry. She asked if George and Larry would come up with other names and George said that his character would still be named George while Larry considered feminine versions of his name.[8] Then Nanase described her character, a rogue who was unfamiliar with the world.[9] Rich and Larry thought her character was amnesic while George realized that she was reincarnated after dying in a different world.[10]
Rich asked why his paladin would join the other characters.[11] Ellen suggested a story of how the rest of the party formed: Larry the bard wanted an adventuring party and recruited George the sorceress. Larry helped Nanase the rogue when she was confused after arriving and Nanase joined the party because she didn't know what to do otherwise.[12] In private, Ellen told Rich why his paladin joined the party: his god had asked him to learn about Nanase[13] because they were confused about her. Nanase seemed surprisingly mundane.[14] When Rich asked if his character had told the other characters about his mission, Ellen said that it was his decision.[15] Rich told the other players that his mission from his god was to defeat a great evil.[16]
Ellen decided to start with an adventure hook.[17] She realized that she hadn't planned the story as much as she would like, so she decided to mostly follow the adventure in the book.[18]
The adventure started with the mayor of a town hiring the adventurers to investigate the disappearance of his prize-winning chicken.[18] The mayor was proud of the chicken, which was named Maribel, and thought the security would be hard to overcome. When Ellen spoke in character, she closed her eyes because she was nervous about seeing other people react to her acting.[19] George thought this was evidence that Ellen is Elliot since he has a review show and thus might be more comfortable performing without seeing his audience.[20]
Ellen described the Maribel's luxury room and the security. The players had their suggestions of how someone could have stolen the chicken and Larry suggested that they try to detect magic.[21] Nanase suggested that a guard or someone disguised as a guard did it and asked for the guard schedules and other relevant information. Ellen couldn't produce such detail but said that a guard had been missing.[22] Nanase also suggested that they should follow Larry suggestion to detect magic. Rich and Larry found her acting impressive, even though she hesitated because she was nervous, because of confirmation bias.[23] When George's character used her detect magic spell, Ellen described a magic miniature piano that was in the room.[24] Rich made a knowledge check to ask why someone might have stolen the chicken, and Ellen mentioned dark magic rituals involving sacrifice of luxurious animals.[25] The possibility that the thieves might sacrifice Maribel made the players determined to rescue her.[26]
