Rich is a young man who is friends with Larry. They initially seemed to be influenced by the pick-up artist community in seeing women primarily as targets of seduction and more generally as sex objects but at least Larry seems to develop into respecting women more. Rich also interested in conspiracy theories about space aliens.
History[]
Hammerchlorians[]
They were first seen speculating about Susan being an alien trying to seduce men to breed hybrids.[1][2] Susan tried to hammer them, which was how she found out that hammer summoning no longer worked, and Catalina hammered them with a plastic hammer (probably Thor merchandise) instead.[2]
New And Old Flames[]
Later Rich and Larry asked Rhoda if the creepy girl who showed up during her interview (Pandora Raven) was an alien.[3] After the fire summon and bulldog dragon attacks Rich interviewed Dr. Physics Professor for his vlog and called him closed-minded for saying that they couldn't be sure it was aliens.[4]
Marker[]
When Pandora asked people what they would like to transform into in the hope that she could give them magic marks, Larry answered that he would like to become an attractive woman.[5] This made Rich blush and he complained that the suggestion was weird and they argued if any of them was being gay. Their argument turned Pandora off from marking them.[6]
Squirrel Prophet[]
Before a Magickal Gatherings tournament in January Larry and Rich complained about Sarah being a fake geek girl[7] because she was more interested in roleplaying than playing to win,[8] but they considered Tedd a legitimate geek girl.[7]
In the first round of the tournament Rich played against Luke and called his deck gay, which made Luke angry so that he abandoned his plan to lose fast.[9] When Larry and Rich talked about Tedd after the round they realized that they didn't know "her" name even though Larry had played against Tedd.[10] In the next round they learned that "she" is named Tedd or Sam so they assumed they Sam is short for Samantha.[11]
Before the third round Rich and Larry learned that Rich was paired with Tedd and Larry was paired with Sarah. When Rich told the one he thought to be Tedd, "Tedd" told them that he is Sam, and Rich and Larry realized that someone them thought to be a woman is named Tedd, which shocked them.[12] Rich said that it wouldn't be their fault if they were "tricked" into being attracted to a man. Larry pointed out that "Tedd" can be short for women's names so Rich asked Tedd about the etymology of their name when they met.[13] Tedd had changed into a female form.[14] When Tedd won the round she fled from the table.[15]
After Larry had played against Sarah and talked to Mr. Tensaided about her he told Rich that he doubted the pick-up artist community's view on women and Rich defended the pickup artist ideology.[16]
When they saw Tedd kissing Grace[17] and that Tedd was now in a male form[18] Rich concluded that Tedd is a sex-changing alien. Larry said that he still had a shot with Tedd since he has girl mode.[19]
In the final round of the tournament Rich and Larry were paired with each other. Rich said that he was disgusted that Larry would date a man turned into a woman as that would be too close to a gay relationship. Larry said that it would not and asked why Rich had a problem with gays.[20]
The Secret of Sam[]
During a later Magickal Gatherings tournament Sarah cried because she thought about Pandora during a game with Rich. Larry assumed that it was Rich's fault.[21]
Who Is Ellen[]
Sometime in the following spring Rich and Larry saw Ellen looking for comics at Salty Crackers Comics. Larry decided to offer help; he explained to Rich that he wasn't going to ask her out.[22] Rich was confused by Larry's success at talking to women without seeing them as seduction targets.[23] Rich approached Ellen and offered to teach her card games in a way that made her suspect him of hitting on her.[24] Thus Ellen said that card games are too complicated, which made Rich dismiss her as a stupid ditzy girl.[25]
Ellen found a roleplaying game and mentioned that she had experience as a game master.[26] Rich expressed his confusion that Ellen could run roleplaying games yet found card games too complicated. Ellen said that running roleplaying games was easy, which offended Rich[27] as he had bad experience running roleplaying games because the players would be uncooperative and would enforce their masculinity norms against him when he roleplayed female NPCs.[28] Ellen decided to run the game as a challenge.[29]
George offered to help Ellen with the rules of the game;[30] Rich didn't object because he was unfamiliar with the latest edition of the game too and because he was confused by Ellen's friendliness.[31] Nanase, Ellen's girlfriend, would play with them too; Rich saw her as sexy and nerdy.[32] Nanase warned Rich that she would get angry with him if he was an unreasonable problem player.[33] That reinforced Rich's assumption that Nanase was an experienced player of the roleplaying game, but she actually knew about problem players because Justin had told her that Rich might sabotage the game for Ellen.[34]
Rich decided to play as a paladin.[35] When George announced that he was going to play as a sorceress, Rich objected to him playing as a woman but George stared him down.[36] When Larry decided to play as a woman, Rich again objected and George again stared him down.[37] After all players had described their characters, Rich asked why his paladin would join the party.[38] Ellen took him aside to suggest a story of how his paladin joined the party: he had been tasked by his god to learn more about Nanase's character;[39] the god was confused by her, and she seemed surprisingly mundane.[40] Rich didn't tell the other players this backstory.[41]
When Larry's attractive female chacracter had to persuade an NPC in the game, Rich said that she didn't have to flirt but should just act compassionate.[42] After Larry's character succeeded at persuading the NPC because of her looks, Rich said "Thank god Larry's hot" and was shocked when he heard what he said.[43] His embarrassment subsided when none of the others shamed him for saying something that could be interpreted out of context as gay attraction.[44] This confused Rich since he was used to people taking every opportunity to enforce masculinity norms.[45] Ellen took Rich aside[46] and told him that there was no shame in roleplaying and that Nanase would be impressed by Rich accepting men roleplaying as women.[47] Rich decided that it was more important to impress women than to enforce masculinity norms.[48] He also realized that his friends who would shame him for roleplaying as women were jerks,[49] that it was their fault that game-mastering was hard for him, and that Ellen was a good game master.[50]
When Nanase's character shouted a challenge at the first enemies the player party encountered even though her character was a rogue and thus supposed to be stealthy,[51] Rich thought she had a plan, which reinforced his impression of her as a perfect player.[52] His character made the other player characters wait outside the room where the enemies were,[53] and they ambushed the enemies when they chased Nanase's rogue as she retreated.[54] Nanase thanked him and admitted that she had acted without thinking[55] and that she was inexperienced with roleplaying games and bad at acting.[56] Rich was disappointed that Nanase wasn't as perfect as he thought[57] but didn't say anything.[58]
After the group had finished the game session, Rich declared that Ellen was good at running the game; Ellen had almost forgotten the challenge.[59] Then Ellen invited the players to dinner together; Rich was surprised that he was invited[60] and decided to continue violating masculinity norms since Ellen and Nanase approved of it.[61] On the way to the restaurant, Ellen said that running the game wasn't as easy as she remembered (she was lying to be diplomatic) and Rich felt vindicated.[62]
