"It's hard to look bad-ass when you're using fairy powers."
—Nanase[7]

Nanase Kitsune (狐 七瀬 Kitsune Nanase?) is an eighteen-year-old woman who is a powerful magic user and martial artist. She likes to read, and has a tendency to go for long periods without saying much of anything, before having plenty to say. She is a strong-willed character, although her mettle was tested when she realized that she was a lesbian. She was in the closet to everyone except her close friends and her girlfriend Ellen until her mother walked in on her and Ellen kissing during the last storyline of the Sister II story arc. Mrs. Kitsune appeared to be accepting of this but, to Nanase's annoyance and anger, said it was just a phase.

Nanase has had a number of changes of hairstyle, some by choice and some not. During Sister II, Nanase cut her hair short to rebel against her mother. Her hair also turned black with dark red highlights after she went "Angel" and burned out her magic for an indefinite period of time. Her hair grew long again in an impossibly short amount of time, apparently as a side-effect of her being burnt-out. Since then, Nanase has cut and re-grown her hair again normally.

History[]

Before comics[]

There are two important parts of Nanase's life from before she first appeared in comics, although it isn't clear which was first, or whether they were at about the same time.

Nanase went on the trip to France with Susan during the summer after their freshman year.[8] During the trip Nanase saved Susan from a vampire.[9] Then the immortals later known as Helena and Demetrius told them about vampires,[10] awakened Nanase and sent them to kill the vampire. The plan was that Nanase would kill the vampire with weapons summoned by Susan[11] but during the fight Nanase was disarmed[12] and Susan had to kill the vampire.[13]

The other is her dating a large number of men during school, unable to find the right one.[14] One of them, Gerald, commented on her date with Ellen with "You were bound to run out of men in this school eventually."[15]

Relations[]

Nanase first appeared in the comic on Monday, January 28, when Elliot took Sarah to see the ASMA Dojo.[16] Sensei Greg asked Nanase and Elliot to have a sparring match to show Sarah what the ASMA dojo was like.[17][18] During the fight Nanase complained about Elliot holding back[19] because she wanted to prove that she really was the best in their class.[20] When the fight was over, Nanase kissed Elliot, like she did at the end of all their fights.[21] After Sarah ran out,[22] Nanase realized that Elliot was using her so he could reject Sarah's feelings without having to talk to her, confronted Elliot about the incident, slapped him for being so cowardly and told him to talk to Sarah about it.[23][24] Nanase then broke up with Elliot[25] because she knew he loved Sarah, and they were hardly serious in their dating (in fact, they were little more than friends with minor benefits).[26] She also wasn't attracted to Elliot and Justin later commented that perhaps this was because men were not for her,[27] but Nanase angrily denied it.[28]

Sister[]

On Thursday, January 31, Susan called Nanase so she could help fight the goo monster.[29] When Nanase arrived Susan quickly explained what was happening;[30] Nanase then sent her colour clones to distract the goo while she told Ellen that she wasn't going to die.[31] After she told Ellen that, the goo restrained them[32] and almost killed them but Grace saved them with her telekinesis.[33][34] Once the fight was over and Edward Verres arrived, everyone went to Edward and Tedd’s house.[35][36] After Edward made Ellen cry, Elliot selected Nanase to talk to Ellen and make sure she was all right.[37] After a touching heart to heart, Nanase managed to convince her that everything was all right.[38] When Justin found a note by Edward that everyone read as a message relevant to themselves, Nanase read it as "Don't allow yourself to be stuck in the closet forever".[39]

Flipping Cardboard[]

On Saturday, February 2, Justin asked Nanase to visit him at the comic book shop.[40] When she arrived, the boys at the shop were excited.[41] While there, Justin sensed that Melissa was coming, and Nanase volunteered to pretend to work there while Justin hid and disguised herself with illusion magic.[42] After Melissa left Duck asked Nanase to show him an illusion of her wearing a bikini.[43] Then Nanase and Justin talked about Melissa.[44] Nanase then spent the rest of the day with Justin.[45]

Night Out[]

In late February, at the dojo, Nanase and Justin talked with Elliot about how they missed Ellen, who didn't go to the dojo. Elliot suggested that they hang out with her the next Friday.[46] Thus Nanase sent her fairy doll to Ellen's house.[47] At Ellen's house Nanase's fairy doll was chased by the family's cat, Brownie.[48] While Nanase was looking back at the cat while flying she crashed in Ellen's shirt and got stuck between Ellen's breasts.[49] After explaining how the fairy doll spell works she told Ellen why she contacted her.[50] Nanase noted that Ellen seemed to be dressed for sleeping. Ellen asked what they were going to do on Friday and Nanase realized that she hadn't decided.[51] Ellen suggested that they rent a movie.[52]

On the next Friday (March 1), while Justin was driving her to pick up Ellen,[53][54] Nanase went back to her fairy doll. She found that the doll's clothes had been changed and Ellen was sleeping. She woke Ellen by tickling her nose with her tail.[55] Ellen explained that she and Grace had played dress-up with the fairy doll.[53] When she returned to her body Nanase found that Justin had tied her hair into a ponytail.[54] When they met Ellen she said that Nanase looked good and Nanase blushed.[56]

When they went to pick a movie from the movie store they bumped into Susan, who suggested that they go see the movies at Susan's house.[57] Nanase and Ellen looked for movies to rent together and Ellen noticed that Nanase was upset. Ellen swatted at Nanase's hair while saying "meow",[58] which at first made Nanase angry, but then made her laugh.[59] Then Nanase thought that her feelings for Ellen were neither's fault as she blamed it on Ellen's FV5 pheromones.[60] Nanase and Ellen couldn't decide on a movie so Susan suggested renting all movies that they were considering and staying at her house for the night to watch all of them.[61]

After they arrived at Susan's house, Ellen pretended to sleep on top of the TV screen.[62] Nanase told Ellen that she was worried about Ellen sleeping so much. Before Ellen could explain the reason for her sleep schedule Susan interrupted them to tell Nanase to tell her parents that she would spend the night there and ask Ellen to follow her to her room.[63] When Nanase called her mother she lied about the others and about her clothing. When Susan came back from her room her hair had became blonde and she refused to explain it to Nanase but insisted that it had spontaneously changed color.[64] When Susan was going to order food she pranked Nanase by pretending to order pizza with anchovies for her.[65] Nanase was in a bad mood and ranted about the others until she realized that she didn't have any complaints about Justin at the time, which made Justin note that she must be hungry.[66] Then Ellen explained the reason for her naps, which reassured Nanase that it wasn't because Ellen was depressed, as she had worried.[67]

When the group ate, Ellen wiped sauce off Nanase's lip, which made Nanase blush.[68] While they were watching movies Nanase felt attracted to Ellen.[69] She was angry with Tedd for designing the FV5 form with pheromones and decided to talk to Susan about her feelings for Ellen.[70][71] When Nanase told Susan about her attraction to Ellen,[72] Susan revealed that Ellen did not have pheromones and Nanase's feelings were real;[73] Nanase did not take this well, and used her fairy doll form to escape to Elliot's house.[74] While she was seemingly unconscious, Susan panicked and told Ellen and Justin about their conversation.[75] At Elliot's room Nanase saw him take off his shirt, which made her angry[76] as it reminded her of her failure to be attracted to him. She told Elliot about her despair due to realizing that she is a lesbian[77] and because her mother supposedly hated lesbians.[78] Elliot told her to go back as the others would worry.[79] When Nanase returned to her body she woke up in a bed in a guest room with Ellen beside the bed.[80] The group spent the rest of the night watching movies.[75]

Painted Black[]

The next day (March 2) Nanase went with her friends to Tedd's house after Elliot has been kidnapped by Damien's henchman Hedge.[81][82] Ellen wanted to go with Nanase and Grace to rescue Elliot[83] and Tedd decided to help them.[84] After they had driven to The Nest[85] Ellen talked to Tedd, who expressed disgust at Ellen having to cuddle with Nanase to keep her warm in the car since he saw her as ugly, so Nanase sent a fairy doll to beat Tedd.[86] Nanase sneaked in with Grace using her fairy form.[87][88][89] Vlad found them[90] and Nanase's fairy doll was knocked out when he attacked.[91] She later used another fairy doll to lay a trail of glitter to lead Ellen to The Nest.[92][93] After they entered they soon managed to find Elliot, who was being chased by Guineas.[94] Then Nanase fought Vlad.[95][96] Vlad ignored her attacks since he was numbed to pain.[97] Then she was defeated by his sonic shriek.[98] Ellen caught her when she fell.[99] Nanase returned to a fairy doll form in the hope of surviving if her body would break its neck and met a team sent by Edward Verres when they entered the nest.[100] After the group returned to Tedd's house, Nanase spent the night there since she was too tired to be seen by her parents[101] and went as a fairy doll to Ellen and Elliot's house.[102][103]

Sleepy Time and Red Alert[]

The following night Nanase dreamed that she was drowning[104] and Ellen, who was a mermaid in the dream, saved her by kissing her and turning her into a mermaid.[105] The next day Nanase could sympathize with Grace about learning surprising things about herself as Nanase had realized that she is lesbian.[106]

Intro to South, Magic Comic Shop and Not a Date at the Mall[]

Nanase was not grounded for spending two nights away from home since her mother pretended to believe that she was tutoring Tedd. She visited a book store[107] and bought a fantasy and lesbian romance novel.[108] The next school day (Monday, March 4), when Justin asked her what she bought at the book store, Nanase was embarrassed and was saved from having to answer by Diane,[109] who asked Nanase to sit with herself and her friends to attract boys to buy things for them. Nanase disapproved of Diane using her and the boys that way and would sit with Diane only on the condition that Justin would sit with them too, which Diane refused.[110][111]

Later that day[109] Nanase visited the comicbook store with Justin.[112] While there she read her novel. When Justin asked her what she was reading she was embarrassed and said that it was a math textbook.[108] On Justin's request she, as a fairy doll, worked as a clerk to attract other visitors to buy something.[113][114] While she was there Ellen visited the shop.[115] At the end of Justin's work day Nanase asked him to buy dinner for her and Ellen.[116] Thus Justin took Nanase and Ellen to the mall for dinner.[117] Justin left Nanase and Ellen to buy their food together while he looked for a table,[118] which made Nanase both embarrassed and happy.[119][120] When the three ate together Nanase ate slowly because she was distracted by her feelings for Ellen.[121]

Before The Party[]

The next time she was at the dojo (Tuesday, March 5) Nanase, angry about being defeated by Vlad and about her attraction to Ellen, accidentally destroyed a punching bag.[122] When Elliot invited her to Grace's birthday party, where everyone except Ellen would change their sexes and wear clothes provided by each other, Nanase hesitated[123] and asked if the transformation would be safe. When Elliot assured her that it would be safe she accepted the invitation.[124]

On Thursday (March 7) Susan secretly arranged for Nanase to pick Ellen's clothes for the party (Susan was supposed to pick them).[125] The thought of picking clothes for Ellen made her so distracted that she was unable to play the chatroom roleplay based on Star Trek and Star Wars that she was playing with Justin.[126] The next day Nanase and Justin talked at school about Justin's feelings about the party as he disliked the thought of going to a party with Grace, whom he had previously only met in dangerous situations. Nanase pointed out that Grace would need friends when she would start going to school with them and that Grace had saved her and Ellen's lives. During the conversation Nanase hovered to keep her eyes at the same height as Justin, which annoyed a physics teacher who was walking past them.[127]

Grace's Birthday Party[]

When Nanase arrived for the party Saturday, March 9, she asked Susan to talk in private to give her the clothes that she had picked for Ellen. Ellen whispered to Nanase about the clothes, which made Nanase highly embarrassed[128] as she thought Ellen wouldn't be informed that she picked the clothes.[129] While Nanase and Susan were talking about the clothes, Susan mentioned that she realized that Nanase planned to use her male form as an excuse to be attracted to Ellen without raising eyebrows.[130] When the party-goers gathered to give Grace their presents, Sarah (who had overheard Nanase's conversation with Susan[130]) gave her seat next to Ellen to Nanase.[131] Nanase's present was the movie The Secret of Nimh.[132]

When Ellen first showed herself wearing the clothes provided by Nanase, a short shoulder-baring black dress, she was embarrassed[133] and Nanase gave her jacket to Ellen and revealed to the others that she had provided Ellen's clothes.[134] When the group took a group photo, Sarah put Nanase next to Ellen.[135] After Susan transformed she told the others that she felt stronger and, when Nanase wasn't impressed enough, challenged her for an arm-wrestling contest.[136] Nanase easily won the arm-wrestling.[137]

When Nanase was about to transform, Grace mentioned clone forms and Nanase asked for one of Elliot's and Ellen's favorite actor.[138] In the transformation booth Nanase thought about her plan to be open about her attraction to Ellen while able to blame it on the transformation but after thinking it through, she realized that the plan might not work.[139] After Nanase had transformed, she lifted Justin in her arms[140]

When Sarah was scared of transforming, Nanase suggested having a clone form of Sarah made as backup, which convinced Sarah to transform.[141] After Sarah had left to transform, Nanase saw that Ellen had gone to another room for solitude[142] and asked her what was wrong. Ellen ranted to Nanase about how Sarah complained about being transformed.[143] Nanase comforted Ellen by reassuring her that everyone saw her as a different person from Elliot, hugging Ellen and saying she would be there for her.[144] When Justin said, while talking about ordering pizza, that Nanase is prone to ranting when she is hungry, Nanase ranted about how she thought her rants were for good reasons.[145]

Then Nanase asked Tedd where he got his outfit for the party, a girl's school uniform from Moperville North High School, and Susan answered that she had traded school uniforms with Tedd since she preferred the boys' uniforms[146] as she hates skirts. Nanase and Susan argued about skirts and were overheard by the pizza delivery boy, Matt Cohen.[147] Nanase ate so much food that Susan asked why she isn't fat. Nanase tested using her fairy doll spell while transformed and got a male fairy doll,[148] which she gave to Ellen as it's linked to her.[149] During the karaoke event Nanase did badly due to singing a song that can't be sung by a male voice.[150] Ellen sung a song about wanting someone to open up to love[151] and Nanase wondered if Ellen was referring to her being in the closet.[152]

Later Ellen took Nanase away for privacy[153] to tell her about her second life alternate's relationship with Archie[154] and how it made her realize that she didn't want to be in a relationship with a man.[155] Then Ellen talked about how important Nanase was to her and offered to talk about anything Nanase would confide. When Nanase didn't confide her love, Ellen went to the porch[156] Nanase then changed back to her female form, followed Ellen outdoors[157] and told Ellen that she was gay. Ellen told her that Susan had told her and they kept it secret from Nanase since Justin wanted her to have a choice of when to come out. They kissed and by the end of the party they were officially a couple.[158]

The After Party[]

The day after the party (Sunday, March 10) Nanase and Sarah visited the comicbook shop. Nanase was angry with Justin for keeping it secret that he and Ellen knew that she was a lesbian.[159] She showed Sarah her spellbook.[160]

Nanase's mother chastised her for not spending all her free time on homework.[161] When Nanase asked why she cared about school if she wanted her her to be nothing other than a homemaker, her mother punished her for her lack of submissiveness by decreeing that Nanase would not be given cookies.[162] Afterwards Nanase's sister Akiko gave her cookies.[163]

Then Nanase sent her fairy doll to Ellen, who was asleep. Nanase tickled Ellen's nose with her tail to wake her and Ellen sneezed at the fairy doll.[164] Thus Nanase's fairy doll had a bath in a washbasin. She used a marble to watch her body with a new spell.[165] Nanase told Ellen that she was unsure if she could be in a relationship while in the closet and asked Ellen if she could[166] and Ellen said that she would deal with it.[167]

The New Students[]

The next day (Monday, March 11), on the way to school, Nanase sent a fairy doll to Susan, who was getting dressed at the time.[168] When Ellen arrived at school for the first time, she swatted at Nanase's hair,[169] which made Nanase angry as she thought they had to pretend that they were strangers. They had a whispered argument until Justin pointed out the they were attracting attention[170] Nanase then used one of her spells to find out how many people were watching them.[171]

Sister II[]

Around that time Nanase was disappointed that the new spells she got were sneaky so she used magic often in order to get more spells.[168][172] On Tuesday, March 12, Nanase took Ellen to a restroom to show her spells. First she showed[173] and explained her clothing exchange spell. Then she showed a photo of her with her summon, "Fox", and explained how that spell works.[174][175] When Nanase told Ellen about her complaints about sneaky spells, Ellen suggested hiding less from her mother, specifically her clothing preferences. After they were seen by Adrian Raven[176] Nanase told Ellen what she knew about him.[177] When Susan sent Ellen a text message about her possible energy buildups, Nanase explained improper awakening and energy buildups to her.[178]

After Ellen told her to hide less, Nanase decided to go to the mall[179] for a makeover[180] including a haircut.[181] Her mother didn't disapprove as much as Nanase had expected.[182] On the next School day (Wednesday, March 13), after Nanase explained the reasons for her makeover to Ellen, Justin and Grace[180][183] and told them about her new hair spell, Ellen asked her to use the spell to grow back her ponytail[184] and said that she should have told her that she was planning to have a haircut, which made Nanase furious[185] so that she stormed off in anger[186] to a bathroom.[187]

Thus Nanase wasn't locked into a classroom[188] when Abraham came to kill Ellen. Nanase overheard his confrontation with Adrian Raven.[189] Nanase summoned Fox to guard her while she tried to send a fairy doll to warn Ellen.[190] The fairy dolls ended up outside Ellen's classroom and transforming her hair didn't allow her to make new fairy dolls.[191] After Abraham defeated Raven[192] Fox distracted Abraham while Nanase ran towards Ellen.[193] Nanase and Ellen has almost reached each other when Abraham knocked them out with a sleep grenade.[194]

Pandora, disguised as Fox, woke Nanase.[195] and told her to stall Abraham with her fairy doll.[196] When she inhabited the fairy doll Abraham was swinging his axe towards Ellen and Nanase stopped him with her fae punch spell.[197] Abraham destroyed her fairy doll.[198] Nanase sent more fairy dolls and Abraham destroyed them as fast as she made them.[199] She gained a new, non-sneaking spell directly due to her actions - guardian form.[200][201] After a brief fight[202] she defeateded Abraham by lifting him into the air[203] and persuaded him not to kill Ellen.[204] After DGB agents Agent Cranium and Agent Wolf arrived[205] and Ellen woke up, Nanase transformed back to normal and passed out.[206]

The use of guardian form always causes a magical burnout, which includes temporary loss of ability to use magic and often is accompanied by hair or eye color change, in Nanase case her hair turning black. Due to her being already close to burnout from other spells, her burnout was more severe than normally, expected to take months instead of usual day.[207][208]

When Nanase woke up in the hospital,[207] Agent Cranium said that her family must not be told what had happened. Nanase wanted to tell them[209] but Cranium persuaded her to keep it secret on Nanase's mother's vehement orders.[210] Nanase mother caught her kissing with Ellen.[211] She called it "just a phase" but apparently wasn't too annoyed by it.[212]

Hammerchlorians and New And Old Flames[]

On April 3 Nanase was called by Susan after Susan had summoned a copy of her fairy doll. Nanase said it was likely running off Susan's subconscious similar to how Nanase's Fox summon does.[213] After Susan came home (April 6) Nanase visited her and Susan showed her summoned fairy doll. Nanase noted that Susan had more of a sense of humor than she used to.[214]

On April 8 Nanase learned that Greg was closing the ASMA Dojo[215] due to lack of students.[216] When he offered his students private lessons at his new dojo Nanase was not enthusiastic about starting over with a white belt.[217] When they left, Justin was sad since he wouldn't meet Elliot anymore.[218] When Elliot suggested that he play basketball with Justin and Noah, Nanase told him that Noah is Melissa's boyfriend.[219] When he suggested hanging out with Justin at Salty Crackers Comics, Nanase thought he would be bored there.[220] The next day, when she was talking to Ellen, Justin and Grace, Nanase told them that she was sad that she couldn't use her magic and couldn't make a comeback at the dojo when she got her magic back.[221] After Justin and Elliot were attacked by a fire summon, part of Nanase hoped that she would get her magic back if another monster attack happened, which made her feel guilty. When she told Ellen (April 10), Ellen reassured her that it was understandable that she missed her magic.[222]

One Way Road[]

On May 1 Nanase revealed not only a new outfit, but she also revealed her new, long hairstyle, as her hair grew fast after her burnout.[223] Nanase made plans with Ellen to have another date, but they were interrupted by Gerald.[15] After he left Nanase was embarrassed when she told Ellen about the time when she dated many men[14] but Ellen wasn't jealous. Then Grace appeared[224] and needed relationship advice, leading to a bowling double date with Nanase and Ellen being proposed.[225] Nanase and Ellen tried to get out of it but could not resist Grace's puppy dog stare.[226] After Grace left, Nanase said she really didn't really know much about Tedd other than the fact that he was weird and her mom treated him like a sad lost puppy.[227] The next day at Salty Crackers, Nanase complained, much to Justin's surprise, about Ellen's lack of jealousy about the men that Nanase had dated.[228] When Nanase told her mother about her double date with Grace and Tedd, Mrs. Kitsune told Nanase that she had to look after her cousin, whom she saw as little more than a child, as Nanase knew more about relationships than Tedd.[229]

On the night of the date (May 3), Nanase and Ellen drove up to the Verres house, but stayed in the car for a while to kiss before they picked up Grace and Tedd.[230] While at the restaurant, they met one of Nanase's ex-boyfriends, Gary who worked there.[231] Nanase apologized for picking a restaurant where Gary worked and told Grace and Tedd about Gerald when Ellen mentioned him.[232] At the bowling alley, the queue was long and Ellen suggested that Nanase and Grace go to the video game arcade while they were waiting.[233] When they came back Nanase overheard Ellen talking about looking towards the future and not dwelling on the past. Gerald showed up to mock Nanase again,[234][235] but he backed down when Tedd yelled at him while the girls glared menacingly.[236]

What Is Love[]

On May 31 Nanase invited Ellen to babysit her sister Akiko together. Ellen suggested that they sneak off while Akiko watched TV but Nanase insisted that they actually keep an eye on Akiko as she took babysitting seriously.[237] While they were babysitting her Akiko said that she wanted to date girls when older and Nanase said that she couldn't just decide to be attracted to girls. Akiko asked what "attracted" means,[238] which led to a discussion about love and attraction.[239][240] Later that day Nanase told Ellen that she was worried about what would happen to Akiko if she did turn out to be lesbian, including her relationship with her mother, and that she worried about her mother's reaction when she would realize that Nanase's homosexuality is not just a phase.[241] Ellen suggested transforming with the transformation gun to have children.[242]

Summer[]

In the summer Nanase babysat children for her mother's friends and neighbors as her summer job.[243]

On June 7 Tedd invited Nanase to his house to study her hair growth.[244] While there Tedd speculated that Nanase's body made her hair grow to use up magic energy that she couldn't use.[245] When Tedd gave her a magic watch Nanase immediately realized its purpose, which annoyed Tedd as he couldn't test its safety features (to make sure that no one could use it without knowing what it does[246]) on her as he had intended.[247] When Nanase tested the watch it made her hair grow.[248][249] Nanase told Sarah to shave her hair to stop its growth.[250] After Sarah shaved Nanase's hair[251] Sarah and Tedd apologized but Nanase said that they had no reason to apologize. Then most of the shaved hair disappeared in a magic explosion[252] that made Nanase's and Sarah's hair longer.[253]

On June 15, Nanase and Ellen learned about a theft from a jewelry store in the mall and Ellen suggested that they solve the mystery, which started their career of solving mysteries as the Meddling Teenagers.[254][255]

End Of An Era[]

Before Christmas (December 23) Sarah took Nanase to a pizza restaurant to ask Nanase for advice on breaking up with Elliot and staying friends.[256] She complained about Elliot's passiveness in planning dates and about them being virgins.[257] Nanase suggested that Elliot wanted to avoid pregnancy since his mother was less than twenty years when he was born.[258] When Sarah said that she could encourage Elliot and Susan to pursue a relationship, Nanase compared that to how she broke up with Elliot after she learned about Sarah.[259] When Sarah asked if Elliot would have broken up with Nanase if she didn't break up with him first, Nanase said that she wasn't sure. She said that Elliot wasn't ready for a serious relationship since he ignores his own needs.[260]

Family Tree[]

After solving the mystery of the haunted locker room, Nanase and Ellen get invited to a New Year's Eve party by Rhea, a college student.[261] Nanase's mother forbade her from drinking and Nanase said that she wouldn't drink but admitted that she might drink with people that she trusts. Her mother commented on how honest she had become.[262] Nanase's mother also warned her that she might be making enemies.[263]

At the party, they found out that Diane is Rhea's adopted sister[264][265] and that she was born ten minutes before midnight on New Year's Eve,[266] which was twenty minutes before Susan, so Nanase and Ellen concluded that Diane and Susan are twins and Susan is adopted too.[267] Nanase and Ellen talked about Nanase's angel spell,[268] which is possibly divine.[269] When Diane talked to them about Elliot's review show, Nanase pointed out that Diane looks like Susan, who is the other cohost of the show,[270] and Ellen said that she was being rude.[271] When Diane asked them to let her meet Elliot,[272] Nanase suggested that she should meet Susan too.[273] Then they met Rhea's roommates Elijah and Rick, who are fans of the meddling teenagers.[274][275]

Nanase and Ellen also met Charlotte, who is the person who told Rhea that Ellen and Nanase might solve the mystery of the haunted locker room.[276] Charlotte offered to let Nanase play video games with her at her room if they wanted to get away from the party and the drinking.[277] When the other party guests, who were only interested in drinking games, arrived, Nanase and Ellen decided to go to Charlotte's room.[278] When they talked about the possibility of the mysteries being genuinely supernatural,[279] Charlotte told Nanase and Ellen that she knew about Abraham's attack.[280] Then Charlotte told Nanase that she knew about guardian forms like Nanase's spell.[281]

Then Diane ran up to them to tell them that the others at the party had become strangely obedient and the men had been transformed into women.[282] After they had confirmed that the male party guests thad been transformed, Diane asked if Nanase could do anything about it with her magic as she had been seen floating at her school.[283] Charlotte told Diane about Nanase's magic burnout. Nanase tried to call Edward Verres with her phone but the signal was jammed.[284] When Diane told the others that a man who seemed to be coming from nowhere had stopped her from drinking the cursed punch and said that he owed her sister a favor,[285] Nanase concluded that he was the reincarnated Jerry but didn't tell Diane.[286] They decided to go outside to escape the signal jamming and call Edward.[287] On the way out Nanase saw that the other party guests and hosts had been transformed to look like her.

When they were outside the magical enemy (Not-Tengu) landed in front of them.[288] As Diane had fled, Nanase stalled for time.[289] Not-Tengu said that he used to have a mind-controlled cult until Nanase's aunt Noriko (Tedd's mother) defeated him and he was now making a new one.[290] He said that he had been guided to Moperville by an unseen force that made him more powerful and Nanase realized that he was drawn by the excess ambient energy.[291] He mentioned that he had targeted Nanase as part of his revenge on Noriko and challenged her to kill him.[292] He threatened to leave[293] and Nanase got her magic back and transformed into her guardian form.[294] Not-Tengu gloated about having manipulated Nanase into using the guardian form as he knew that he was invincible in hand-to-hand combat[295] and the combat instinct of the guardian form confirmed that she was unable to harm him.[296] Nanase told Ellen and Charlotte to flee while she held him off but Ellen used her copy spell to change into the guardian form herself.[297][298]

The guardian forms gave them a telepathic connection.[296] Ellen suggested trying to consume the ambient energy and they fled into the air.[299] Not-Tengu chased them[300][301][302] and made threats that Nanase and Ellen couldn't hear.[303] Eventually the ambient energy in the neighborhood ran out[304] and not-Tengu fell to the ground[305] (while Nanase and Ellen still had energy left since they had only used ambient energy[306]).

When Nanase and Ellen landed Grace and Elliot had arrived[307] and Nanase and Ellen soon ended their guardian form spells, which caused magic burnout.[308] When Diane and Charlotte arrived, Diane said that they should kill not-Tengu to end his spell, Nanase said that it wasn't needed as he no longer had the magic energy needed to keep the spell active while not-Tengu changed back to his true (human) form.[309][310] After Edward arrived with agents Wolf and Cranium arrived,[311] Cranium identified not-Tengu and Wolf was surprised[312] and let slip that the one who previously defeated him is a legendary powerhouse.[313] Nanase disliked having to keep the incident secret[314] and Edward said that secrecy is necessary to keep magic away from dangerous people like not-Tengu. Nanase asked him why he kept Noriko secret from Tedd[315] and Edward said that it is important to keep her secret and at first refused to explain why but then said that Tedd would become mute again if he learned about her.[316] While on the way back to the party Charlotte noted that she could contact Nanase and Ellen about suspected supernatural incidents now that she knew about Nanase's and Ellen's powers.[317]

The next day, when her mother asked her about the party, Nanase didn't tell her what had happened.[318] The day after that (January 2) Nanase (who had got her magic back again) complained to Ellen about having to keep secrets.[319] Nanase wanted to ask Edward why they had to keep Noriko secret from Tedd[320][321] but Ellen believed Edward's claim that it would be dangerous to his mental health.[320] Nanase also suggested telling Susan that she might be adopted but Ellen wanted to wait to give Susan's mother more time to tell Susan.[322]

Playing With Dolls[]

On a Saturday later in January Susan asked Nanase to make a fairy doll looking like Susan for her to summon[323] so they visited Tedd.[324] When Tedd offered her a magic watch of Grace's form, Nanase failed to resist the temptation.[325] When Susan asked for the fairy doll to be proportionately shorter than her, Nanase teased her about being more vain than she would admit.[326][327] When Tedd mentioned her height change watches, Nanase noted that Tedd's basement is full of temptation.[327] Tedd and Susan asked her to make a fairy doll of Tedd,[328] which she did.[329] When Susan was about to test a height change watch to design a form for her fairy doll, Nanase asked to try it out too[330] and used it to become taller[331] When Tedd told Susan what variants she could add to Susan's watch, Nanase was intrigued by one with four breasts[332] and said that Tedd should have given it more of a chance, which made Tedd embarrassed enough to offer Nanase a watch to shut her up.[333]

After Nanase changed into Susan's form to make a fairy doll[334] she reassured her that she looks good tall[335] and Susan explained why she dislikes being tall, including internet commenters calling her lanky,[336] which made Nanase angry[337] and she offered Susan a hug for support.[338][339] Then she made the fairy doll for Susan and landed in Susan's hands.[340] Susan said that it felt weird to hold a fairy doll and let her hold Susan's old fairy doll.[341] Then Nanase made a fairy doll of her current look (with partly black shoulder-length hair) for Susan.[342] Then Nanase, on Tedd's suggestion,[343] made a fairy doll of Grace's form[344] After they had finished making fairy dolls Nanase was tempted to stay to continue experimenting and inviting Ellen to join her instead of going on their planned date.[345]

So A Date At The Mall[]

Later that day Nanase returned to Charlotte (and Rhea's) place with Diane, to solve another mystery and because Nanase wanted to get to know Susan's likely sister.[346] While Diane was driving Nanase and Ellen, when Diane objected to Ellen referring to it as a date as they were supposed to solve a mystery, Nanase sang the themetune of Ducktales since it contains the word "mystery".[347] The mystery was a non-human cloaked figure who had been seen and asked young men for their names.[348] After the group had read articles about the mysterious cloaked figure[349] Ellen noted that the cloaked figure behaved inconsistently as if there were two of them[350] and the others realized that there probably were two cloaked figures.[351] While Charlotte was analyzing the sightings Nanase showed Diane her fairy doll and told her about her semi-autonomous double, Fox.[352] After the group concluded that one of the cloaked figures was likely in downtown Moperville,[353] Nanase noted that it wasn't feasible to look for her and Diane suggested that Nanase play video games with her summon.[354] Nanase lost to Fox,[355] either because the summon could do everything Nanase could do with better focus and knew what Nanase was thinking or simply because Nanase was unlucky.[356]

Then Elliot's girlfriend, Ashley, called Ellen and reported that one of mystery figures they were searching for (Dame Tara) was at the mall and Elliot was going to talk to her.[357] The cloaked figure was a griffin who was hostile to Elliot because she thought he had done something to her wife (Andrea).[358] As Elliot and Ashley were busy talking to Dame Tara[359][360] and the last thing Ellen heard of Ashley was that she was going closer to Elliot and the griffin to tell them that Charlotte's group had an idea of where the other griffin was,[361] Nanase tried to contact Elliot with her fairy doll and it failed so the group worried that Elliot and Ashley were dead until Elliot belatedly replied to Ellen's phone calls.[362] Elliot and Ellen decided to meet Tara together to help them find Andrea.[363]

Thus Nanase, Charlotte, Ellen and Diane joined Elliot, Ashley and Tara.[364] When Tara saw Nanase she said that Nanase has the aura of a princess[365] and told the group about other things that her aura vision showed, including that Diane is a potential vampire hunter.[366] After Charlotte told Tara how her group knew about her wife[367] and Tara and Charlotte concluded that Andrea was using a bell tower as a landmark[368] the group decided to go to the bell tower.[369] Nanase wanted to go with Diane and Charlotte but Diane, annoyed by her protectiveness, insisted that Nanase should go with Ellen.[370] When Diane hurried to her car, Nanase wanted to catch up with her as soon as possible and spilled the secret that she thought Diane is Susan's sister to Elliot and Ashley.[371] She dragged Ellen and Ashley to their car.[372] In the car she asked Ashley for questions and Ashley answered that she wouldn't ask any since they had just met,[373] which made Nanase suspicious because Ashley seemed too nice.[374] When their car was delayed Nanase became worried for Diane again.[375]

Before the group met again (along with both griffins as Tara had found Andrea)[376] Diane and Charlotte were attacked by a vampire because of Diane's magic affinity for vampire hunting.[377] Elliot told them to leave since he thought the exploding vampire would attract attention.[378] Nanase, Ellen, Ashley, Diane and Charlotte went to Charlotte's apartment and stayed outside while Elliot followed the griffins into a forest.[379] Nanase decided to send a fairy doll to Elliot and the griffins and after finding that Cheerleadra needs to be contacted differently than Elliot with the fairy doll spell[380] Nanase met Elliot and the griffins to talk more.[381] Andrea was impressed by her fairy doll.[382] They talked about the magic energy clog and Andrea told her that there is another half of their Universe.[383][384] Then Andrea told the others that she had killed six vampires, not including the one that attacked Diane and Charlotte,[385] and that two immortals had helped her hunt vampires and possibly withheld information about Tara, which made Nanase angry as she thought of how the immortals made her and Susan kill a vampire.[386] Then they decided to meet again four weeks later.[387][388]

After the griffins left Nanase told Elliot that they had to tell Susan about Diane and the possibility that Susan was adopted since Diane was at risk because of the vampires.[389] Elliot suggested asking Edward Verres if Susan is adopted.[390] After Nanase returned to her body she told Diane that she has the same affinity as Susan and that they may be sisters.[391]

Sister 3[]

The next day (Sunday) Nanase asked Edward about Diane and Susan, and he told her that they are not twins and Susan is not adopted[392] but said that they might be half-sisters.[393] She also asked if there was any way to protect Diane from vampires and Edward said that Diane was in less danger than most since most vampires can't sense that she is only a potential vampire hunter.[394] Later that day Nanase was present when Voltaire appeared in front of Edward and Elliot.[395] Then Nanase and Ellen told Susan about Diane and the vampire attack[396] and Susan agreed to meet Diane.[397] On the following Friday, when Sirleck possessed Ellen[398] he lied to Nanase about a paranormal incident at the college to get her out of the way.[399] When Nanase realized that Ellen was missing later that day she contacted Ellen's parents and they formed a search party and Nanase flew without a care for secrecy during the search.[400]

Reflections[]

Sometime during the following week Nanase stopped keeping her hair transformed to see how her mother would react to seeing evidence of her magic.[401]

Later (Monday, one and a half weeks after the Magus and Sirleck incident), when Nanase was invited to a party to introduce Ashley to Elliot's friends,[402] she hoped that it would help her get over her suspicion of Ashley.[403]

At the party (the following Saturday) Nanase talked to Grace about how she was baffled by Ashley not asking questions.[404] She made a fairy doll and changed its clothing with a new spell[405] to show it to Ashley. When she showed the fairy to Grace, Grace questioned why the fairy wore skimpy clothing and Nanase explained that she thinks sexy clothing is cool.[406]

When Ashley arrived for the party she at first failed to recognize Nanase[407] because Nanase had stopped transforming her hair.[401] When Ashley asked why Nanase used to keep her hair transformed Nanase explained that she transformed it to hide the hair color change when her burnout ended and expressed her approval of Ashley asking questions.[408]

When Nanase showed Ashley her fairy doll with skimpy clothing and offered to let her hold it, Ashley reacted with embarrassment and refused to hold her[409] as she thought Nanase seemed to be hitting on her. Nanase became increasingly desperate to impress Ashley[410] but didn't make more attempts. When Susan wanted to invite Diane to the party Nanase mentioned that Diane probably knew much about the group.[411]

When Susan and Diane arrived, Nanase hoped that they would tell the group how they are related but hid her disappointment when Susan said that she didn't want to talk about it.[412] When Ashley was excited about playing with size change magic Nanase wondered why she wasn't impressed by her fairy doll and concluded that Ashley was impressed but hid it to avoid seeming weird.[413] When Susan walked away while Diane hugged Sarah,[414] Nanase followed her and asked what was wrong. Susan answered that Diane made her feel like a waste of space. Nanase resisted the temptation to tell her that Diane used to be a jerk, reassured Susan that the group likes her[415] and that Diane's ability to seem cool is superficial, and realized something about herself.[416] When Sarah tried to shrink Elliot from behind, Nanase said that Elliot should shrink Sarah as punishment.[417]

When Grace was naked because her clothes had grown to their normal size while she was shrunk, Nanase hid her eyes but peeked though her hands.[418] When the group was arguing what the word "nerd" means, Nanase suggested that it's about hyperfocus on something.[419]

Nanase later told Ellen that she had realized that her complicated feelings about Ashley were because Ashley wasn't impressed enough by her to ask questions.[420] Ellen said that Nanase has good reasons to expect people to be impressed by her and suggested that she make it up with Ashley by being friendly.[421] Thus, when Grace wanted to order a large pizza because she was hungry and Ashley suggested that she drink water to be able to order more rationally, Nanase praised the suggestion in an over-the-top manner.[422]

When the group was talking about Tedd's planned lab at the university, Nanase said that it seemed like a way for Arthur to have eyes and ears there.[423] When Tedd and Diane were arguing whether magic should be kept secret, Nanase said that secrecy is isolating to those who have magic, which made Ashley cry[424] because she was drifting apart from her friend Liz for that reason. That led Elliot to encourage Ashley to tell Liz about her secrets[425] and Grace to suggest telling Rhoda and Catalina about magic.[426]

When most of the group were transformed by the mirror door, Nanase was transformed into a large Grace[427] and complained that it felt weird.[428][429] Justin suggested that the weird feeling was because she had Grace's spatial awareness along with her antennae.[430] Ellen tested that hypothesis by asking her to say where Ellen's hand was without looking and Tedd told them to do the experiment more times.[431] The results confirmed that Nanase had enhanced spatial awareness.[432]

After everyone had transformed back to normal, when Susan talked about killing another vampire during the vampire attack at the mall,[433] Nanase cried because she felt guilty about failing to kill the vampire in France.[434] Susan comforted her, saying that neither of them should have had to kill the vampire.[435] That made Ashley impressed by both of them.[436]

When the group decided to shrink to eat cake[437] Nanase inhabited her fairy doll.[438] When they realized that the tables were too high to eat while shrunk, Nanase suggested that they eat the cake normal-sized since she was unsure what would happen if she ate as a fairy doll.[439]

Later during the party Nanase asked Diane if she was going to tell her friends about magic since she was keeping many secrets but Diane wanted to keep her secrets.[440]

Balance[]

On the following Monday, when Nanase was trying to read a novel while having Fox do her chores, Nanase couldn't understand the novel and her summon couldn't figure out how to fold her clothes. When she dismissed Fox she found that she could think more clearly.[441] She checked her spellbook which had changed. Then she called Ellen and Susan, who told her that their spellbooks had changed too. She also called Tedd,[442] who didn't know what had happened.[443]

Edward Verres didn't want Nanase to meet the griffins on the following Saturday.[444] Nanase's parents made her babysit her cousins so that she couldn't meet the griffins.[445]

Jestful Statement[]

When Justin told Nanase that people at school were impressed by Grace making an effort to be clear, Nanase said that it was understandable if the men expected women to be inscrutable if they had dated Diane or Lucy when they were jerks or herself when she was in denial about being gay.[446] As Justin also mentioned that there were rumors about Grace dating Ellen, she was unhappy that no one suggested that she was dating either of them.[447] When Grace rose in popularity in the following days, the rumors about whom Grace was dating included Nanase, which pleased Nanase.[448]

Who Is Ellen[]

Later, when Ellen decided to run a a roleplaying game with Rich as a challenge,[449] Nanase was nervous[450] since she is bad at acting[451][452] and since she didn't know the lore of the game.[453][454] When she told Ellen, Ellen suggested that she make her ignorance of the game world part of her character;[455] thus Nanase played as someone from another world who had been reincarnated in the game world.[456][457] Nanase told Rich that he shouldn't go easy on Ellen[458] but warned him about being an unreasonable problem player[459] as Justin had told her that Rich might sabotage the game for Ellen.[460]

After she heard about the mystery of the game, where a fancy chicken had been stolen, Nanase used had ideas of how the thieves could steal it and how to investigate it; her detective experience made that part easy for her.[461] As the player characters were upstairs early in the game and Nanase's character was scared of stairs,[462] she fell down the stairs[463] and took the other player characters with her.[464] Ellen invented a cleric to heal the player character[465] and Larry, one of the other players, thought he was the mastermind of the chicken kidnapping;[466] Nanase agreed that this idea made sense[467] and Ellen decided to run with it.[468]

When Ellen told Larry that he didn't to act out his character's attempt to persuade the quest giver, Nanase was happy.[469] She had trouble imagining herself as her character.[470]

As Nanase's character was a rogue, she looked for traps in the dungeon and found tripwires rigged to make heavy objects fall from the ceiling[471]

When Nanase saw that Ellen had stopped keeping her eyes closed, she resolved to make an effort to roleplay.[472] Thus her character shouted a challenge at the first enemies she encountered, which confused the others as her rogue was supposed to be a stealth specialist.[473] Rich's character held the other characters back from following her.[474] Realizing what he was planning, Nanase's character retreated past the other player characters to lead the enemies into the ambush.[475][476] After the fight, Nanase thanked Rich for coming up with the ambush and admitted that she didn't think it through[477] and that she had trouble roleplaying[478] George, the fourth player, suggested that she should think of what she had in common with her character and what her character had that she would like to have.[479] Nanase realized that her character was different from her as her character didn't know about magic before arriving in the game world whereas she was a magic user who had to keep magic secret.[480] Then she realized that the game allowed her to fight without any risk of hurting real people or killing characters.[481] When Rich suggested that they should loot from the dungeon, Nanase complained about the ethics of seizing the property of suspected theves.[482] She found the next fight less satisfying than she had expected.[483][484]

In the final dungeon there was an Egyptian hieroglyph inscription that Nanase's character could recognize but not read.[485] There was also a cage with a chicken that didn't look like a fancy chicken.[486] Nanase came up with a plan:[487] her character pretended to read the hieroglyph inscription[488] and talked about leaving, which made the main villain enter the room.[489] Then Nanase's character ran out of the room[490] and was chased by some of his minions.[491] Larry's character was angry with Nanase's character, which made Nanase sad, so Larry explained that his character had abandonment issues.[492] One of the enemies chasing Nanase's character threw a rock at her, which threw off her balance;[493] she deliberately rolled through a trap[494] and escaped the trap herself[495] while getting the pursuers trapped.[496]

After the group had finished the game, Nanase was hungry[497] so Ellen invited the players to go to a restaurant together.[498]

Relationships[]

Elliot[]

Nanase began dating Elliot some time before the The Goo story line; however, she left him once she realized his feelings for Sarah.[25] She didn't seem upset when leaving him, describing their relationship as friends with benefits.[499] and later explained that she felt no physical attraction to him while they were dating.[27][77] The two of them remain friends, and trained at the Anime Style Martial Arts Dojo together until it closed.[500][215]

Tedd[]

Nanase and Tedd are cousins,[501][502] but they don't seem to be very close. When Grace decided to go on a double date, Nanase and Tedd found it awkward to meet each other.[227][503] Tedd used to call Nanase his "ugly cousin".[504][505]

Justin[]

Nanase often hangs out with Justin in the comic shop where he works.[506][507][508][509] He occasionally teased her that she might be gay (something he felt he had rights to do without insulting her since he is gay),[510][511] something that she (ironically) got mad about on multiple occasions[512][513] prior to the Night Out story arc, when she realized that she was indeed a lesbian.

Ellen[]

During Ellen's battle with the Goo, Nanase was able to calm her down (because, due to Elliot's memories, Ellen remembered dating Nanase) and explain to her that she wasn't going to die.[514] When Ellen was crying because she couldn't be Elliot,[515] Elliot chose Nanase to comfort her,[516] which she did.[517][518]

After Ellen joined the regular cast, Nanase began to feel attracted to her and chalked it up to Ellen's permanent V5 status.[519][520] After learning that Ellen had no V5 pheromones,[521] Nanase realized that she really was a lesbian.[522] This made her uncomfortable around Ellen until the Grace's Birthday Party arc, when she came out to her friends and confessed her feelings to Ellen.[523] The Ellen/Nanase shippers rejoiced. The two began dating in secret to avoid the disapproval of Nanase's mother.[524]

During the climax of the Sister II arc, Nanase saved Ellen from Abraham,[525][526] ultimately learning a powerful new spell,[527] nearly dying, and temporarily burning out her magic in the process.[528][529] Shortly after Nanase woke up, the two shared a kiss. They were caught by Nanase's mother,[530] who elected to tolerate what was happening.[212] The two now date openly.

Note that their figure is similar enough they can wear each other clothes.[531][532][533][534]

Susan[]

Susan was the one who revealed to Nanase that Ellen had no V5 abilities and therefore was also the person who helped her to realize her true orientation.[521] It was later revealed during the Hammerchlorians story line that their friendship went back to the trip to France,[535] where Nanase saved Susan from the aberration[536] and they later worked together to kill the aberration. Susan suspected Nanase was a lesbian due to the fact that Nanase was immune to mesmerization by the aberration, but Nanase denied it until Night Out.[537]

Sarah[]

Nanase first met Sarah at the ASMA Dojo[538] and, after seeing Sarah's reaction to her kissing Elliot,[539][540] broke up with Elliot so he could be with Sarah.[25][499] During Grace's birthday party Sarah played Cupid for Nanase and Ellen.[541] Despite Sarah's occasional jealousy[542] she grew to like Nanase[543] and asked her for advice when she wanted to break up with Elliot.[544]

Grace[]

Nanase first met Grace at Moperville North when they fought the goo. Grace saved both her and Ellen that day,[545][546] which made Nanase grateful for her presence there.[547] Later, after the Painted Black arc, Nanase and Grace were able to sympathize with each other, as they both had recently undergone personal revelations.[548]

Mrs. Kitsune[]

Mrs. Kitsune is Nanase's mother. She is apparently willing to make Nanase miserable to keep her knowledge about magic secret.[549]

Mrs. Kitsune used to give Nanase the impression that she hates lesbians, which was the main reason Nanase feared the thought that she was in love with Ellen.[550] However, when Nanase was caught kissing Ellen, appeared to be accepting of her, though saying it was only a phase.[212] It's possible Mrs. Kitsune still drops hints she don't expect the relationship to last,[551] on the other hand maybe Nanase just misestimates her reaction again.

Mrs. Kitsune forces Nanase's nose to the grindstone with her studies, despite apparently intending her to grow up to be a housewife.[552][553]

Mrs. Kitsune thinks Nanase's abilities are ideal for babysitter[554] or homemaker.[555] That or she didn't tell her daughter what she's training her for ...

Nanase used to disguise what she was wearing from her mother by wearing large floppy clothing over the top, as her mother apparently wouldn't approve of her choice of outfits.[556] In Sister II, Nanase confessed to her about what she really wears, which made Mrs. Kitsune apparently less angry than Nanase thought she would be.[557]

Akiko[]

Nanase has a good relationship with her sister, Akiko. Akiko gave her cookies when her mother forbade it,[558] and Nanase takes babysitting Akiko seriously.[559] Akiko says she wants to be a lesbian like her sister,[560] but she is probably unaware of what that truly means, as she is only 8 years old.[561]

Diane[]

During most of their high school years, Diane admired Nanase[562] (and was attracted to her, though she may not initially have understood the feeling)[563][564] but Nanase saw Diane as a pest.[565][566] Since Nanase became convinced that Diane was Susan's sister,[567] Nanase has felt an obligation to protect her.[568][569][570][571] Possibly this is magnified by guilt over her previous negative attitude.

Magic[]

Nanase is a naturally powerful magic user thanks to her genetic inheritance. She was identified as 'royalty' with 'the blood of queens' by Tara and Andrea, who explained that in their half of the universe royalty are the most magically powerful of humans.[365] She experienced her Awakening while in France with Susan as the result of Immortal intervention, which gave her access to her magic spells. Sensei Greg described her as the most powerful fighter in the Dojo next to himself.

Anime Style Martial Arts[]

Strength and Movement[]

Thanks to her martial arts training, Nanase possesses unnatural strength and is capable of quick and physics-defying movement.[572][573]

Illusions[]

Nanase can disguise herself with an illusion that changes how people around her perceive her.[574] She can also make her hands and/or body glow in order to make herself look cool.[575] This, too, is part of ASMA training.[576]

Multicolor Illusion

Multi-Color Technique[]

Also known as "Mahoh no Supekutoru" (魔法のスペクトル Mahō no Supekutoru?, Magical Spectrum), a technique mastered by Nanase, which may[577] or may not[578] be an actual spell. It allows her to create illusions of herself while in battle. The illusory duplicates are intangible and disappear in a puff of smoke upon contact, existing for the sole purpose of distracting or confusing an enemy.[579] Three of them can be created each in one of the colors of red, green, or blue. Nanase herself is colored whatever the complementary color to the active color or colors is, allowing her to pretend to be one of her illusory duplicates when two of them are active.[580] Each color is associated with a particular personality:

    • Green - playful
    • Blue - "crybaby"
    • Red - violent

Spells[]

Nanase is currently learning more spells as she becomes more adept with magic.[581]

Flight[]

Nanase is capable of magical flight,[25] which gives her the aerial advantage when fighting.[582] Glowing is an optional part of the flight spell. At one point, she used the spell in the presence of a Physics teacher, much to said teacher's chagrin.[583] And based on Diane's comment, it probably wasn't only time she was "floating around" in school.[584]

Fairy Doll[]

Nanase in fairy doll form discusses the spell with Grace.

If Nanase is familiar with a person and their location, she is able to create a miniature fairy doll of herself near them to communicate.[585] She is able to leave a trail of glitter in doll form. She retains her fighting abilities whilst in doll form; however, her physical strength is scaled down accordingly (unless she is casting Fae Punch, which is a spell isolated to the fairy dolls: it is a short-ranged projection of a standard punch, but it's HER standard strong-by-training punch, so it's tough).

It has been pointed out that the fairy doll is an extremely powerful spell, defying many laws of physics.

Main article: Nanase's Fairy Doll

Visibility spell[]

Nanase can temporary sense how many people can see her and how many are looking.[581] Note that the spell actually isn't limited to people: Nanase suspect that it counts even animals,[586] although it's also possible it detected Magus.

Seeing her body when Fairy[]

As upgrade of fairy doll spell, Nanase can watch her real body using a crystal ball substitute.[587] She has done so using a marble, but it is unclear what constitutes a "crystal ball" under the conditions of the spell.

Clothing Exchange[]

A diagram explaining how the clothing exchange functions

Nanase's Clothing Exchange spell is capable of "trading" any piece of clothing Nanase is wearing for another piece, as long as she knows where the traded clothing is located. The spell also produces a gust of wind, even indoors.[588]

Decoy Summon[]

An early test of directly controlling Fox

Nanase is capable of summoning a duplicate of herself, which she has nicknamed Fox.[589] Fox's personality is based on whatever emotion Nanase was feeling when she summoned her. Nanase is also capable of controlling Fox directly, although she has said there is "a steep learning curve" to avoiding Fox speaking Nanase's thoughts aloud, or toppling down stairs. Nanase used Fox for its original purpose when fighting Abraham,[590] however it seems she found other uses as well.[591] Fox can beat Nanase in Mario Kart, which Diane and Charlotte had interesting explanations of ... unless it was just luck.[592]

Hair Transformation[]

The hair transformation spell is capable of instantly changing Nanase's hair length, color and style.[593] It's possible using this spell long-term causes her actual hair to grow more quickly.[594]

Fae Punch[]

As upgrade of fairy doll spell, Nanase can project burst of kinetic energy from fairy (or something like that). In her own words: "short range, no stronger than a punch ... but they're my punches".[595]

Guardian Angel[]

Due to Nanase's acts of passion and self-sacrifice against Abraham in the Sister II arc, she gained this new spell.[596] Through it, Nanase manifests with an angel-like appearance, with large feathered wings and tail-like appendages that can deflect blows,[597] and with her whole body seemingly glowing white.[598] Based on Charlotte's research, the spell is variant of guardian form.[599][600] It is apparently fairly powerful, but not as powerful as one might think, as Abraham has a reputation for being an utterly incompetent mage[601] and the guardian form was no match for Not-Tengu[602] as long as he had access to excess ambient energy.[603]

Fairy clothes choice[]

Originally, the newly created fairy always wore the same outfit when it first appeared—a weird pink full body suit. Nanase has learned to choose different outfits for the first appearance.[604] It still needs to be "simple", but Tedd didn't explain what that means... while her spell book is likely to explain it in too much detail. It is noteworthy that Nanase didn't notice this upgrade despite otherwise keeping attention on her spellbook.

Fairy clothes change[]

At some point shortly before the Ashley Introduction Party,[605] Nanase learned a spell that lets her change the clothes on a fairy doll she is inhabiting. She can only create outfits based on clothes she actually owns and has somehow prepared.

Nanase's mind[]

Nanase recently joined the part of cast who has anthropomorphic personifications of different sides of her personality. Hers are angel and devil who appeared to decide if she should trash-talk Diane to Susan.[606] They appear considerably more distinctive than Diane's. Interestingly, Nanase's angel side is completely different from her Guardian form.

Quotes[]

"Oh... Yay... It's up to me to keep Ellen from going totally insane... Yee..."

"Dammit, what do you say to the female duplicate of your ex-boyfriend who is hiding under the table and crying?"

"That is not true! I do not rant wildly! If I rant, I do so with good reason! Like that time after I skipped lunch when they showed that movie on igneous rocks in chemistry class? I had every reason to rant! Why would you schedule such a boring movie right after a lunch period, and why would you show a movie about rocks in a chemistry class?! Maybe it had a point. I don’t know. I fell asleep. But still, it seemed really out of place to me. I think…"

Trivia[]

  • Nanase was named after the Japanese musician Nanase Aikawa (相川 七瀬 Aikawa Nanase?).[607]
    • Assuming that Nanase's given name uses the same spelling as the musician's, the Kanji actually mean "seven rapids".[608][609]
  • Nanase's surname, Kitsune, is Japanese for "fox".[610]
  • Nanase was originally intended for a different webcomic.[611][612]
  • Nanase thinks coffee is bad for her, even when sleepy on Friday morning[613]
  • Nanase has dated 4 known men before she dated Ellen (Elliot, Gerald,[614] Gary,[615] Grant[616])
  • Nanase is a Lipstick Lesbian.
  • Nanase doesn't think she would enjoy playing basketball.[4][617]
