Luke was introduced during the Squirrel Prophet II storyline as someone who came to Salty Crackers Comics ostensibly to ask Justin about his fight with a fire summon. He was actually there to find out more about Cheerleadra, who had fought alongside Justin on the same occasion. While at the comic shop, Luke also used some sort of aura vision to examine Justin and others for magic powers and magic marks and discussed Magic with Justin. Luke is homosexual and has had bad experience with people using "gay" as an insult from another comic shop he used to visit. He is dating Justin, after having assumed him to be straight until Justin told him otherwise at the end of Squirrel Prophet - Final Battle. Despite people making stupid Star Wars jokes upon learning his name, he actually likes Star Wars.
History[]
Luke used to visit some other comic shop, where he had some bad experiences involving people using "gay" as an insult. However, he doesn't want to talk about it, so very little is known about it.[2]
He was recently marked by Pandora (see abilities).[3]
Luke has been friends with Camdin and probably two others, who knew of magic marks and have been trying find out about them and about magic in general[4] and Cheerleadra in particular[5] (all of which they thought of as superpowers). They hoped to be superheroes, if they could make contact with other heroes and/or find villains to tackle.[6]
Squirrel Prophet[]
Luke came to Salty Crackers Comics to speak to Justin. When he "looked" at him (with his aura vision), he also noticed Grace[7] - and immediately freaked out and ran to his car.[8] He then talked with someone over phone, confirming Justin's mark and saying that there was also some girl there whose aura looked like "that Shadow Guy's" with "prehensile tendrils coming out the back of [his] head" (likely Noah).[4] The one on the phone persuaded him to return to the shop and take part in the Magickal Gatherings tournament.[9]
Luke is apparently a pretty good player. He specializes in blue energy and spells, and uses delaying tactics similar to those employed by Tedd. In the first round he was paired with Rich. He planned to lose quickly in order to get to know Justin and Grace but when Rich derided his use of fairy cards as "gay" he became angry and played to win, which he did.[10] When he got a "bye" and couldn't play in the second round,[11] he spent most of that time talking with Justin about Star Wars,[2][12][13] forgetting that he wanted to ask him about Grace.[14] When he "looked" at George and Tedd, his aura vision was overwhelmed with a blinding flash.[15]
He was able to win one battle on autopilot - without paying enough attention to the game to notice that his attack finished his opponent.[16]
He originally wasn't sure it was Tedd who blinded him (it could also have been George) but later checked George and the rest of the non-main-cast players.[17][18] Exactly at that time, Tedd was trying to use his ability to visually analyze magic on Justin, and noticed Luke checking other people's auras.[17][19]
Before the last round of the tournament Luke overheard Rich and Larry speculate that Tedd is an alien.[20]
In the last round of the tournament, Luke's battle was against Tedd.[21] As they were both using the "denial" style of play, they quickly got annoyed at each other[22][23][24] and in the end hit the time limit,[25][26] being unable to end the match in any other way than a draw because all their monsters were debuffed with enchantments.[27] During the round Luke overheard Justin and Larry mention that Justin is gay.[28]
After Grace convinced Justin that Luke might be gay[29] and informed him about Luke's magic prowess detection spell,[30] he asked him to stay after the tournament to talk.[31][32] They mostly covered magic in general, and marks in particular,[33][34][35][36][37][38] but Justin took the opportunity to test Grace's hypothesis and, as he got the hoped-for reaction, asked Luke for a date.[39][40]
Later storylines[]
Luke and Justin didn't go on a date until three weeks after they met because of Justin's work schedule.[41]
Two weeks after Luke met Justin, he met Justin and Grace at the comic book store and mentioned how Grace left for mysterious reasons a week previously.[42] Later that day Camdin complained about Luke's failure to find out more about Grace and Cheerleadra.[43][44]
Luke and Justin had their first date at a bowling alley, where they met Diane and Lucy.[45][46]
Balance[]
[In the Balance storyline group, publication order significantly diverges from in-universe chronology, meaning that some earlier events were unknown to readers of later events. Readers wishing to avoid spoilers should read all published Balance comics before the following summary.]
Luke, Camdin and their friends were out late on the Saturday night of Tedd's party for Ashley, looking for heroes or villains. They saw Rhoda and Catalina, and Luke pointed them out as a warning because of their auras.[47] Camdin and the two unidentified friends, however, approached the couple,[48] giving chase when Rhoda and Catalina tried to avoid them.[49] Catalina assumed a fearsome cat-woman form[50] enlarged by Rhoda,[47] from which Camdin ran away, knocking Luke violently to the ground.[51] Luke then also fled, seeing not only Catalina as a 'monster' but also Rhoda's aura of exceptional power.[47]
Nursing an injury from his fall, Luke saw Justin the next day, and Justin proposed his 'simple heist' plan to investigate his unnamed friends' (Rhoda and Catalina's) magical abilities.[6] Likely influenced by the events of the night before, but not apparently not knowing that the people involved were the same, Luke refused, pointing out ethical issues with manipulating friends and finding out secrets without consent.[52] He explained to Justin and Grace about his 'superhero' friends, without naming names. Later, back at the Moperville University dorms, Luke argued with Camdin about the previous night's incident and Camdin's actions. Luke said he wanted no further part in the 'superhero' effort.[48]
Abilities[]
He was recently marked by Pandora. She technically told him about it, but as she was on the spiritual plane while doing it, he didn't hear anything.[3] The mark gives him the ability to see if a person has access to magic and apparently what kind of magic - he seems to be able to distinguish between those with Uryuom magic and marked people,[7] but according to Pandora he has not yet learned to distinguish those who have a mark from those who had it but now don't have it because they awakened.[35] He also seems to have some ability to discern the power level of a magic user (before being properly introduced to Grace, he referred to her as "super powerful girl", and her aura spread considerably further from her body than Justin's[7]; he saw Tedd's aura as a blinding flash[15]).
After the incident with Rhoda and Catalina, Luke became so scared of what he could see with his spell[53] that he probably tried to stop using it[6] but sometimes he uses the spell anyway when he's overcome with curiosity.[54]
Relationships[]
Justin[]
Luke was so obviously interested in Justin at first meeting that Grace, Sarah[55] and George[13][56] all quickly noticed. He didn't want to talk to him about it because he assumed Justin to be straight,[16] and Justin—under the same assumption about him—at first didn't notice.[57] After some persuasion from Grace,[29] however, Justin did a few "tests" (including showing his abs[34]) and when Luke reacted favorably he asked him out.[40] They have dated at least once and Luke has visited Justin at the comic shop.
Grace[]
Luke has met Grace and some of Justin's other friends at the comic shop. Since he saw Grace with his aura vision,[7] Luke is scared of her.
Tedd[]
Having realized that the blinding flash came from Tedd's (presumably extremely strong) aura, Luke grew wary of him. It didn't exactly help that he saw him kiss Grace,[18] or that he overheard Rich and Larry speculating that he is an alien.[20]
During gameplay, Luke was very annoyed by Tedd's playing style. In fact, the feeling was mutual: they were both annoyed by the style the other was using ... which was basically the same as their own.[22][23]
Camdin and the 'superheroes'[]
Luke is (or was) part of a small friend group that became convinced they were superheroes after finding themselves with magic powers[58], and decided to seek out villains to defeat (and/or other heroes).[59] Luke's efforts to find out more about Cheerleadra were (at least initially) on behalf of this group and with their encouragement.[4][9] As well as some information on Cheerleadra and some of the other main cast characters, the group is aware of an individual they call the 'Shadow Guy' (apparently Noah or someone like him) and a young woman who can adopt a fearsome half-cat form (Catalina).[59]
Although the group comprises four people, only Camdin and Dave are identified by name or face.[43][51][48][60][58] Luke was shown speaking on the phone to a member of the group, who may or may not have been Camdin.[4] After the incident with Rhoda and Catalina, Luke and Camdin argued, and Luke said that he was done with their activities.[48][58]
