Kevin[2] is a talking wand who was stored at the PTTAOLUTASF until the destruction of the Dewitchery diamond. He was made by Arthur to train wizards but didn't work at first.[3] When the wand was activated by energy from the evaporating shards of the dewitchery diamond[4] he was sentient, possibly due to the magic change. He helps wizards train their magic strength by helping them cast spells entirely with their own power, without ambient energy.[5]
When he sensed that Ashley is a wizard he appeared in front of her but then sensed that she is weak for a wizard.[6] When Kevin mentioned that the urteronc was more interested in Ellen than Ashley, Ashley panicked and threw Kevin at the urteronc.[2]
Arthur instructed Ashley to train with Kevin in Tedd's presence.[7][8] During the first training session[9] Kevin complained about Ashley procrastinating. He also reacted to the other people who were present: He noted that Sarah is not a wizard. He said that Grace is confusing and she explained that she is a alien hybrid. He declared Tedd "graduated".[10] He noted that Elliot is not a wizard but has magic and declared that he was going to ignore him. Then Kevin announced that he was going to help Ashley train her strength and mentioned that he would also help Sarah.[5] When Tedd expressed interest in making training wands, Kevin felt threatened until Tedd clarified that he didn't intend to make talking wands.[11] After Ashley's first training session, Kevin warned her about training too much and instructed her to train without waking him.[12]
During one lesson with Ashley, Nanase visited Tedd[13] to ask for his help figuring out how to use her summoned duplicate "Fox".[14][15] When Tedd mentioned trades to reduce the casting costs of spells, Kevin asked for explanation. After Tedd explained about trades, Kevin declared that he, as a teacher, should be among the first to be informed about new information like that.[16] Kevin suggested that he and Ashley should observe Nanase's experiments to learn about trades, as it could be useful for Ashley's training.[17] When Nanase and Fox played video games to test their mental performance,[18] Kevin couldn't see the screen as he has different senses than humans.[19]
Tedd asked Kevin for insights about Fox and Kevin explained that Fox's artificial intelligence runs off Nanase and that the alternative would be program-based artificial intelligence which, unless absurdly powerful, would result in simple, usually animalistic, behavior.[20] Tedd asked if Arthur had to be absurdly powerful to make Kevin, but Kevin explained that making an artifact like him isn't quite as hard as summoning him would have been.[21] Then Kevin suggested that Nanase should focus on what she wanted Fox to do while summoning her.[22] After Nanase showed that she is strong, Kevin told Tedd about a hypothesis that some people with talent for magic are strong because of their magic and that this sacrifices some of the magic strength they could have otherwise.[23] When Kevin learned that Tedd can make spells to make anyone look like a specific person, he noted that such spells could be dangerous.[24]
When Nanase said, after she summoned a muscular Fox, that she would like to have a way to look like that herself, Kevin said that she should work to get such a spell.[25] Nanase said that she couldn't control what spells she got but Kevin told her that she would be able to control it if she trained seriously and told her off for only using her magic casually.[26] Nanase, who agreed that she had been too lazy aboutt training magic, asked Kevin how to train.[27] Kevin told her to focus on what she wanted while exerting herself with magic, especially training spells.[28] He also offered to teach Tedd training spells.[29] Then Kevin told Nanase and Tedd that he couldn't teach them then as he needed to rest.[30]
During a later lesson with Ashley and Sarah, Tedd asked if Kevin knew anything about uryuom projections.[31] Kevin asked if uryuom projection are relevant to Tedd's work, as he saw people as being defined by a single purpose.[32] Tedd thanked Kevin for giving him an idea.[33] When Tedd passed out partly due to sleep deprivation, Kevin was concerned[34] and gave a lecture about the dangers of overwork and the importance of sleep.[35]
