Jay, also known as Jill,[1] is Arthur's granddaughter. She goes to Moperville South High School.[2] She is planning to go to Moperville University after she graduates.[3] She is a wizard who apparently wants to meet other magic users to copy their spells.[4]
History[]
Backstory[]
When Jay (who still went by the name Jill) was about six years old, a man attacked her at a playground by giving her visions where Arthur turned into a monster and tried to kill her, apparently in order to make her attack Arthur. The immortal Pandora devided to save Jill.[5] Pandora tried to increase Jill's magic resistance,[6] but lost control of her rage and gave more power than needed, and accidentally made Jill a wizard. Jill copied the attacker's spell.[7] Her counterattack caused the attacker to panic and run blindly into a road, and he was killed by a truck while Jill was connected to him by the magic.[8] Then Jill passed out from magic burnout.[9]
Early appearance[]
When Diane denounced the rumors that she is a slut, Jay said that she likes gossip[2] and probably copied a spell that Diane was unconsciously using.[10]
Gathering magic and intelligence[]
Jay has sought to gather information on or get close to magic-users, especially Tedd and their friends. She seeks to add new spells to her repertoire by witnessing their use.
When Sam was talking to Grace about being transgender, Jay, who was using Camdin's smoke form spell[11] and called herself "Smoke",[12] overheard him mention transforming and asked him to show his transformation.[13] Instead Grace showed her own omega form,[14] which Jay could not copy. When Jay fled confused by Grace's magic, Grace realized that "Smoke" is a wizard who wanted to copy spells.[4]
Jay delivered pizza to a party that Grace, Tedd and their friends were having[15] and was disappointed that Grace and Diane answered the door rather than Tedd, as she had already seen Grace's and Diane's magic. She planned to meet Tedd at another time, and to avoid showing them the smoke form spell, perhaps to avoid Tedd and Grace linking their meetings with Jay and understanding her activities.[11]
Jay has applied role descriptions from fantasy adventure games to members of the main cast friend group, apparently based on the person's magical abilities: Grace, who Jay had seen transform into her part-squirrel omega form, Jay called 'the Druid'; Diane, who Jay saw using magic, acrobatics and oratory to gain attention and influence the Moperville South student body, she called 'the Bard'; and Tedd, who Jay knows of by reputation, possibly from Arthur, she called 'the Wizard'.[11]
Parable[]
When Mist pulled several people into a shared dream in order to look for someone useful, Jay was one of those dreamers and her own dream magic modified the dream.[16][17] The dream became a parody of the video game series Fable.
Jay was cast as a shadowy puppet master who wanted to learn about Grace from the dream, partly because she actually wanted to learn more about her.[18] Susan saw her watching Rhoda and Catalina in her shadowy form[19] and confronted her.[20] Jay, who didn't want to risk ending the dream by telling Susan about it,[21] complained about Susan and Rhoda being cast in the wrong roles as she thought Grace should be the protagonist.[22][23] She turned off cheats and Susan lost her levels and her evil karma.[24][25]
Later in the dream Jay became the hero of magic, changed from her shadow form into more like her normal appearance, and was captured by the villains.[26] Susan was sent to rescue her from the villains' fortress by the seer, who was based on Arthur.[27] When Susan asked for her name, Jay answered "Jack" because she didn't want to reveal her real name.[28] After Susan and Jay escaped the fortress,[29] Susan held Jay (who was tiny as she had shrunk out of her shackles during the escape[30]) in her hand and confronted her about her knowledge of the real world[31] and Jay denied that she knew what Susan was referring to.[32][33]
Later, while Jay was thinking about Grace, she realized that she couldn't have set up the dream[34][35] and that she didn't know what was going on.[36]
When the seer told the heroes that the hero of ranged weaponry was Grace[37] Jay wanted to recruit her and was disappointed when the seer said that Susan would do it alone.[38]
The seer later revealed himself to be working with the villains and brought Jay and Rhoda in shackles to Susan and Grace.[39] When the seer said that his goal was to control who would have access to knowledge and power, Jay realized that the portrayal of Arthur in that role could be inspired by her perception of him alone.[40]
While Susan was preparing to fight Arthur and his minions, the Mist arrived and confirmed that it was a dream.[41] After Mist made Arthur and his minions disappear,[42] Jay became angry[43] and nearly fought Mist[44] before Mist assured her that it wasn't the real Arthur. Jay then denied that she cares about him.[45] When Grace realized that she knew that it was a dream[17] Jay became hopeful about learning more about her but then she heard Mist interrogating Rhoda (as she was what the unicorn had been looking for[46] and decided to protect her so she woke herself up, ending the shared dream.[47][48][49] After waking up Jay didn't remember much of the dream.[49]
Hope[]
Later Jay went to a Magickal Gatherings tournament at Salty Crackers Comics with her friends Mark and Steve.[50] Grace greeted her enthusiastically and introduced Tedd,[51] and referred to Jay as a friend;[52] Jay thought cynical thoughts about Grace and her friends.[53] When Susan arrived, Jay inexplicably recognized her and knew her name. Jay's friend Mark told her that Susan was famous for her review show but Jay hadn't watched it.[54] She approached Susan and told her that she knew her name; Susan told her that she thought Jay's name was "Jack".[55] They talked about their names, as both go by names that aren't their legal names, [56] and about Jay's haircut and the fact that Susan dyes her hair.[57] When Sarah arrived she greeted Jay;[58] Grace ashamedly explained that she had told Sarah that she likes Jay's hairstyle.[59] Jay told herself that it didn't mean anything.[60]
In round 1 of the tournament Jay was paired with Susan.[61] Jay lost both their games.[62][63] After their games Susan said that many people recognized her but she only recognized Jay. Jay explained that the others recognized Susan from her review show, which made Susan embarrassed.[64] Susan complained that her fans didn't know her true self but Jay reassured her that it was a good thing.[65] Afterwards Jay was embarrassed by how open she had been with Susan.[66]
Before round 2 of the tournament, Jay wondered why she liked Susan, and had to remind herself that she wanted to keep her secrets about magic from Susan.[67] Jay was paired with Sarah.[68] When they say down to play, Jay mentally listed Susan's friends and what they implied about whether Susan knew about magic.[69] Jay won the games against Susan[70] fast, so that she had to wait for the others. While she was waiting, she noticed that Susan was stressed after her own games. Susan explained that she was tired from acting a role while playing.[71] Jay asked if she had given bad advice but Susan reassured her that she hadn't acted because of Jay's advice.[72]
In round 3 of the Magickal Gatherings tournament Jay was paired with AJ.[73] Before they sat down to play, Jay saw AJ using a spell to look at her. She was scared of the possibility that he was looking in her head.[74] Her anger caused the lights to flicker and made several other people shudder.[75] Jay copied AJ's spell to cast it and saw that it only shows the target in a sexy feminine form and gives information about their Magickal Gatherings decks, which made her laugh.[76] Then Jay saw that Tedd was looking at her and realized that Tedd had seen that she is a wizard. Grace approached her to comfort her.[77] Grace showed understanding and mentioned that she knew that Jay had caused the lights to flicker, and subtly offered to talk about her experience with magic and to throw out AJ.[78] When Jay and AJ sat down to play, AJ quietly insulted Jay. Jay described how AJ looked to his spell to let him know that she knew about it, which spooked AJ so that he tried to forfeit, but Jay insisted that they should play.[79]
Relationships[]
Arthur[]
Jay is the granddaughter of Arthur. She has apparently referred to him as "The Devil" on at least one occasion.[3] Jay dislikes him enough that a villain in the unicorn's shared dream was based on him, acting out her resentful view of him as someone who controls access to knowledge and power[40] and yet she cares enough about him that she became angry when he disappeared from the dream, though she denied it.[45] She made a comment that dream-Arthur acting out her own opinion of him prevented her from deducing what the others in the dream thought of him, suggesting that this is a concern of her intelligence-gathering.
Tedd[]
Jay considers Tedd cool and wants to befriend them.[11][35] Before she met Tedd, she thought of Tedd as a woman[35] because she learned about Tedd from Arthur. When she met Tedd, she correctly concluded that Tedd might be trans or non-binary.[53]
Grace[]
Jay wants to befriend Grace to learn about her mysterious magic and because she is Tedd's girlfriend.[35] They had an unfriendly encounter where Jay used the smoke form.[13] Grace likes Jay's hairstyle, which makes her think of horses.[80][81] Later Grace and Jay started going to movies along with their friends, including Camelia.[82] Grace now calls Jay her friend but Jay doesn't consider them that close and sees their mutual acquaintances as Grace's followers and believes Grace's cheerfulness is insincere.[53]
Diane[]
Diane distrusts Jay[80] because she has heard her admit that she likes gossip.[2]
Justin[]
Justin knows Jay from school, but only by sight as 'pony-hair girl'; he wanted to compliment her hair, but had avoided doing so at school so as not to seem weird.[80]
Camdin[]
Jay thinks of the smoke form spell as being from 'that shaggy gross guy' (Camdin).[11] This suggests that she saw him use the spell, but does not know him.
Susan[]
Jay met Susan in the shared dream. She had a strong reaction, possibly attraction, to Susan's fully-levelled-up appearance in the final scene.[83] Jay remembers Susan's name from the dream and Susan remembers Jay's name as "Jack".[55] When they met in the waking world, they bonded over the fact that they both go by other names than their legal name.[57]
Magic abilities[]
Jay is a wizard, able to copy other people's spells.[4][11] She was awakened by Pandora.[52] The first spell she could use can make something similar to a shared dream where people have some control,[36][17] which she copied from the man who inflicted nighmares on her when she was a child.[7] Her spells also include two other copied spells: Camdin's smoke form spell[11] and Diane's charisma boost spell.[10]
