- "I will destroy the world as it is now known and replace it with another."
—Pandora talking to her son
Hope is a recently reset immortal. Before her reset she went by the name Pandora, sometimes Pandora Chaos Raven[6] or Box.[7][8]
Pandora was a shapeshifting Immortal who commonly took the form of a small girl, dark cloud or adult woman. She was first seen in the Hidden Genesis arc in her "girl" form, and later in a monstrous "cloud" form, though much later she is seen taking an "adult" form. She seemed to have links to Magus and some sort of unknown goal which involves helping Magus escape from the spiritual plane. She is the mother of Adrian Raven.[9]
Pandora was reset for breaking immortal law after saving her son from being shot at.[10][11] She used the opportunity the reset gave her to destroy a lot of aberrations[12] ... which revealed a lot of immortals to humans, triggering a Seer meeting to determine the next change in Magic.[13]
History[]
Backstory revealed in Sister 3, Part 1 and Hope, Part 11[]
When she was young Pandora, who named herself for the myth of Pandora's box, would make mortals perform silly tasks in exchange for secrets. When she was about 150 years old she grew bored.[7] Then she met the adventurer Blaike Raven, who declined her information about the treasure he was seeking (there was no treasure, only a dangerous monster)[14] because he wanted to find out the hard way, which Pandora could relate to. They became adventuring companions and lovers. They had a son, Adrian.[4] Then Blaike was killed by a werewolf[15] (probably the spawn of the Dewitchery Diamond[16]) while he was trying to protect a group of travelers.[17] In order to stay with Adrian and keep her memories of Blaike, Pandora did not reset when she grew old.[18]
Later Pandora, along with many other immortals, confronted Ragnarok, the over-thousand-year-old immortal who had created the werewolf curse.[19] Pandora attacked him and wounded him enough to convince the other immortals that they could defeat him if they ganged up.[20] After they killed Ragnarok, Pandora told the other immortals had been planning to force them to change immortal law. Pandora also wanted to change immortal law but the others were strongly opposed.[21] When the immortal Fabius proposed that they should vow to keep Ragnarok's actions secret because humans would fear immortals if they learned what Ragnarok was capable of, Pandora agreed so she helped persuade the other immortals and made the vow herself.[22]
Backstory revealed in False Kings, Part 1[]
When the young wizard Edward Verres was a student of Adrian, Pandora gave him a spell for summoning charts[23] in order to make Adrian notice that Edward is a wizard.[24]
Backstory revealed in Hope, Part 9[]
Once Pandora noticed an old man targeting a child named Jill (later Jay) with nightmare visions apparently intended to make her attack her grandfather Arthur.[25] Angry that someone was harming a child,[26] Pandora decided to empower Jill to resist the attack[27] but she lost control and gave Jill too much power and accidentally made her a wizard, and Jill copied the attacker's spell.[28] Jill's counterattack caused the attacker to run into traffic in blind panic and he was killed by a truck.[29] Pandora and Jill both passed out from using so much power so quickly and Pandora thought she might have killed Jill[30] since she couldn't find Jill afterwards. Eventually she decided to seal away her memory of the event.[31]
Hidden Genesis, In The Shadows and Sister II[]
Chaos in her child form.
Pandora appeared speaking to Edward Verres, Agent Wolf and Agent Cranium about the nature of a dimensional occurrence that had been caused by the arrival of Magus. She described Magus as an egg that had fallen from his nest,[32] which she had caught and hidden in a new nest. She went on to say that Magus would grow to become a hawk while the agents were mice, but encouraged the agents to become hawks themselves for the sake of her entertainment. She then disappeared, leaving the agents confused.[33] The purpose of this warning may have been to manipulate the agents into trying to stop Magus from getting a body in order to make his situation more entertaining, and if it was and if Helena and Demetrius were the friends that Edward enlisted to investigate the warning,[34] it succeeded as Helena and Demetrius often chased Magus away from Elliot.[35][36]
Pandora gave Magus a convoluted plan for escaping the spiritual plane by getting a body: She gave him the powers to amplify emotions and sabotage technology,[37] which he used to make Tedd transform Elliot with the transformation gun[38] and destroy the transformation gun so that they couldn't transform him back.[39] Then Magus made Grace come up with a plan to use the Dewitchery Diamond, as she, Tedd and Elliot didn't know what it actually does.[40] When Elliot used the Diamond, his female duplicate Ellen was created[41] (Pandora coerced Sirleck into bribing the PTTAOLUTASF guard,[42] for an unknown purpose). Then Magus would make Ellen use her transformation beam on Elliot,[43][44] which would allow Magus to possess Elliot.[45] Then Magus would use the Dewitchery Diamond to get a body of his own, destroying the Diamond in the process.[46][47]
Before Abraham arrived at Moperville she appeared to Magus to mock him for his failure to successfully escape the spiritual plane[48] and advice him to follow Ellen.[49] She chastised Magus for referring to her as "Chaos": and told him to be more creative, refusing to give her real name, which she later revealed to be Pandora. She revealed her shape-shifting ability after Magus had left, changing from a dark cloud of random shapes and beings to the small girl form seen earlier.[50]
Pandora is next seen when Abraham (who had woken from his statue form when Elliot used the Dewitchery Diamond[51][52]) arrived at Moperville South High School to kill Ellen and she appeared to prevent Magus from leaving and ordering him to follow Ellen and protect her.[53] After Adrian Raven was defeated in combat by Abraham,[54] Pandora is shown watching over Adrian and she restored his illusion, telling him she would take care of the situation and referring to herself as his mother.[9] Then she assumed the form of Fox, Nanase's summon, to wake Nanase up to protect Ellen.[55][56]
After Abraham was defeated by Nanase and rendered unconscious by Edward Verres, Pandora urged Magus to amplify Edward's anger so that he would lose his self control and kill Abraham, which was one of her true purposes for letting Abraham attack the school and making Magus follow Ellen[57] (her reasons for making Edward kill Abraham were later revealed to be revenge on Abraham for making the Dewitchery Diamond; also possibly on Edward for ending his friendship with Adrian[16], although it was more that she forgot about the friendship and about Tedd at that point[58]). Pandora threatened to abandon Magus if he would not cooperate, but Magus refused regardless. Pandora, enraged, attacked him,[59] told him her full name, and then left him isolated on the spiritual plane.[6]
Later, Pandora met with her son in the form of Agent Wolf in his hospital room. Once Raven saw through the disguise,[60] Adrian yelled at his mother for allowing Abraham to attack the school while Pandora berated her son for fighting with Abraham as another purpose of allowing the attack was to teach him that he was wrong to care about other people.[2] After Adrian insisted he wanted to make a difference, Pandora said she would destroy the world as we know it and replace it with one in which Raven can do as he pleases without restraint.[61] She later revealed her child form to a news camera crew while they were interviewing Rhoda in front of Moperville South. She called attention to herself by appearing out of nowhere, floating, and laughing, before disappearing in a blast of light and disruptive radiation.[62]
It is possible that she is behind Magus' situation, and that it has to do with Adrian somehow, given how she tried to force Magus to influence Abraham's death and her statement to Adrian that she would destroy the world for him.
Before Squirrel Prophet[]
Pandora gave magic marks to people,[63][64] including Justin, Rhoda, Catalina[65] and Luke,[66] and awakened Justin,[67] without them being aware: she may have explained what she was doing while hidden on the spiritual plane so they couldn't really hear her,[66] which is probably a loophole of some immortal rule. It was assumed Dex was one of them, although after the reveal that it was Voltaire who did the "bring the apocalypse" thing with Dex[68] this may or may not really be true. The fact that she gave magic marks without knowledge or consent is terrifying to Noah.[69] She also dammed the flow of magic to empower all magic users in Moperville.[70][71]
Marker and Escape From The Mall[]
Just before Halloween Pandora went to the mall to find people to mark.[72] She assumed the cover story of being a psychology student to ask people what they would like to transform into for one day[73] in order to remind them of their yearnings for such spells.[74] Before she started asking questions she gave good Tom a spell to sense puppies in danger.[75] Many of the people she asked would get sex-related spells that were useless to her purpose.[70] She encountered Rich and Larry,[76] who could get spells to turn into attractive women but their homophobia turned Pandora off from marking them.[77] Then she saw Ashley and Liz.[78] She sensed that Ashley's personality was contradictory in terms of spell potential as she has fantasies about transforming other people but wouldn't since goodness is a central part of her.[79] When Pandora asked Liz what she wanted to transform into, Liz said that she wouldn't want to transform for just one day and then lose it and Pandora sensed that she could give her a spell.[80]
Then Pandora saw Catalina and Rhoda[81] and was annoyed that Catalina had a name-based affinity[82] but marked her anyway.[83] Pandora stayed to observe Catalina.[84] Catalina's spell soon activated, turning her into a catgirl.[85] Catalina and Rhoda fled into a dressing room to avoid being noticed.[86] Pandora saw Rhoda (whom Pandora had already marked with a size-change spell in order to save her from a wild boar[87]) shrink Catalina with her clothes and make herself taller using new spells, which surprised Pandora as it proved that Rhoda had awakened.[88] After their attempts to hide Catalina failed,[89] Rhoda and Catalina were chased by Kitty[90] and Pandora marked Kitty[91] depite her name-based affinity.[92] After Rhoda and Catalina managed to hide and transform back to normal, Pandora conjured a spellbook for Rhoda with a note about Rhoda's awakening and Catalina's magic mark.[93][87][94] When Kitty met her friend Felix, Pandora decided to mark Felix to as Felix is a trans woman.[95]
Squirrel Prophet[]
Pandora watched from the spiritual plane during a Magickal Gatherings tournament.[96][97][66] She gave Tedd a magic mark for sex changing to be nice and was surprised when he cast it during the tournament (it seems that not only clairvoyance of immortals get closer to omniscience when they abandon empathy, it gets worse when they focus on empathy[58]) and decided to be nice more often in order to be surprised.[98] She marked Sarah,[99] giving her a simulated time stop spell.[100] When Grace, Tedd, Sarah and Justin talked about what they had learned that day, Pandora overheard them mention that Grace had learned about the magic marks from her dreams and decided to investigate her dreams to find out who told her.[101]
Question Mark[]
The next night Pandora visited Sarah[102] to talk about her new spell.[103] Pandora told Sarah how the spell works,[104][105][106] warned her that the government might force her to work for them if Edward learned about her spell,[107][108][109] told her that she has a magic affinity for that spell[110] and told her to use the spell often to become able to cast it without ambient energy or awaken.[111][112]
Sister 3[]
The next night Pandora visited Grace's dreams.[113][114] The emissary of Magic shielded her from the dream and aggressively commanded her to leave.[115] He told her that he is an emissary of magic. Pandora said that he couldn't force her to leave.[116] As she couldn't attack first, the emissary suggested that they should talk. Pandora reassured him that she saw Grace as family[117] as she is "practically married" to Pandora's "grand godson".[118]
The emissary told Pandora that magic was on the verge of changing because too many people knew about it.[119] Pandora recalled a memory from her previous self of the previous change. Pandora declared that she would fix it.[120] Pandora changed into her child form[64] and threw a childish tantrum about the magic change. Then she said that she would ask someone else to fix the energy problem.[121] The emissary asked her why she wanted to make magic available to everyone[122] and Pandora said that she did it for her son.[123] Then the emissary told her that an immortal had manipulated a griffin into attacking Cheerleadra (Pandora knew that Cheerleadra is Tedd's friend Elliot) and Pandora resolved to tear that immortal to shreds.[124]
That morning Pandora visited Sarah[125] to tell her about the threat of magic change[126] and instruct her to consume the excess energy to make it safe to remove the dam.[71] Pandora vowed to help Sarah awaken.[127] When Sarah asked for her name, Pandora answered "Box".[8]
That evening Pandora visited Adrian[128] to ask him to remove the dam on magic. Adrian said that he didn't approve of what she did supposedly for him[129] and accused her of almost killing Noah[130] (he thought she was responsible for the attack at the dojo[131]). Pandora, who didn't know what he was referring to,[16] blamed Noah for putting himself in danger, which caused Adrian to think that she deliberately did it to punish Noah for fighting for selfless reasons. Adrian said that she should help people but Pandora said that she had filled her lifetime quota of helping the world by helping kill all werewolves. Adrian said that his father would hate what she had become.[15] After she left,[132] Pandora contemplated their fight and her actions. Then she thought about Tedd[16] and decided to find out what purpose magic had for his powers.[133][134]
The next day Pandora sought out Heka in Egypt[135][136] to ask him about the purpose for someone with powers like Tedd.[5] Heka told Pandora about seers[137] and revealed that seers, wizards and people with magic affinities are descended from immortals.[137][138]
As Pandora realized that Susan is Adrian's descendant,[139][138] she aggressively asked the young immortal Zeus why he was watching Susan in her sleep a later night.[140]
The next time Pandora visited Sarah,[141] Sarah asked her what was wrong and Pandora said that her son would hate her[142] because she had passed on a lie from a previous incarnation and failed to see the evidence that it is false.[143] Sarah comforted Pandora,[144] who called her a good friend when she left.[145]
Later that night Pandora visited Tedd.[146] She told him that she gave his magic mark, that she is Box (she also told him that her name is Pandora)[147] and that he is a seer.[148][149] When Tedd was disappointed that his magic technology only works because he is a seer,[149] Pandora talked about his power[150] until she realized that she was starting to sound evil.[151] Then Pandora told Tedd that her son, Adrian, is Tedd's godfather since he used to be friends with Tedd's parents,[152] that Adrian was expected to teach Tedd magic since Tedd was expected to be a wizard and that Tedd's mother, Noriko, is a powerful wizard descended from a line of monster hunters.[153] Tedd asked why the magic analysis wand showed him to be magically impaired and Pandora answered that he resisted the wand. When Tedd deduced that his parents were disappointed,[154] Pandora said that they wanted him to be able to defend himself and ranted about how hard it is to be a parent.[155] Then she made a stick for Tedd to turn into a magic wand[156] and instructed him to make it a wand of his mark spell.[157] Then Pandora instructed Tedd to test the wand and put an FV5 spell in it.[158] Tedd was impressed by Pandora's reaction to Tedd using sex-change spells and happy to call her godmother.[159] Then Pandora told Tedd to go to bed.[160]
When Tedd left to go to bed,[161] Pandora had an internal debate about her previous actions[58] and the mental instability that caused them. She decided to do a modified reset, or refresh, that passed on emotional attachments.[162][163]
The same night Pandora bestowed a magic mark on Sarah's boyfriend Sam, who is transgender, and gave him a note about the mark.[164]
The next day, when vampires were rampaging in the mall, Pandora warned Adrian about the vampires and told him that he had to protect Diane and Susan.[165] When one of the vampires was about to shoot Adrian,[10] Pandora killed him and the other remaining vampires.[166] Before Pandora was reset for breaking immortal law, she told Adrian, Susan and Diane that Susan is Adrian's descendant and Diane is his daughter.[138] Pandora used the connection to the other immortals that the reset gave her to kill most of the vampires in the world,[12] which caused the will of magic to consult the seers on what kind of change to make.[167][13]
Hope[]
Pandora's refresh succeeded.[13]
Months after the vampire attack, the immortal who was formerly Pandora was wracked with guilt over her previous actions.[168] She, who now went by Hope,[169] went to Salty Crackers Comics to buy Magickal Gatherings cards and enter the next Magickal Gatherings tournament[170] in order to bond with Sarah over a hobby.[171] When she saw Justin, who was a clerk at the shop, she recalled what she thought when she marked him.[172] Before Hope left the shop she saw Luke and recalled what she thought when she marked him; her recollection was fragmentary.[173] Then she went to the magically hidden room where she lived.[174][175] She was happy that Justin and Luke seemed happy.[176]
Hope planned to play the Magickal Gatherings card "Kaphoglio's Mimic" to remind Sarah of Pandora's box.[177] She trained Magickal Gatherings by playing against a chatbot-like summoned opponent; Hope lost, which made her very frustrated[178] as she worried that she might be eliminated before she got to play against Sarah or lose to Sarah before she could play Kaphoglio's Mimic. Then she realized that it was the Friday of the tournament and worried that she would be late.[179] She hoped that Tedd and Grace wouldn't be there since she didn't feel ready to play the role of Tedd's godmother.[180]
Hope arrived at the comic shop one hour early as she had mixed up what time the Magickal Gatherings tournament would begin.[181] Grace and Tedd were there and Grace approached Hope;[182] Hope fled elsewhere in the shop.[183] As more players arrived, Hope was disturbed by the noise of their conversations.[184] When Jay arrived, Hope knew that she (when she was Pandora) had awakened Jay's magic even though she couldn't remember it,[185] which confused her.[186] She was worrying that Sarah might not go to the tournament by the time Sarah arrived ten minutes before the tournament.[187] When Hope saw Sam,[188] she remembered how she gave him and other trans people magic marks; the memory made her dizzy and Tedd approached her, concerned about her dizziness.[189] When Justin read the rules of the tournament, Hope was surprised to learn that losers wouldn't be eliminated.[190]
When Hope saw AJ before the tournament she recalled that she gave him a spell that allowed him to cheat at Magickal Gatherings and felt guilty.[191] She was paired with Mr. Tensaided in the first round of the tournament.[192] Hope lost. Then she saw Jay and again became curious.[193] She tried to access Pandora's memories of Jay but found them blocked from her,[194] and when she pressed further, she got a painful warning from her previous self.[195]
In the second round of the Magickal Gatherings tournament Hope was paired with Guy.[196] As Guy had lost to AJ in the first round, Hope felt even more guilty about enabling AJ's cheating and was tempted to intentionally lose, but decided to do her best in order to have a chance to meet Sarah.[197] She lost to Guy anyway.[198]
Then the metaphorical brick wall blocking Hope's memory of Jay cracked, but she stopped it from breaking down as she wanted to focus on meeting Sarah.[199][200] However, after AJ cast his spell on Jay[201] and Jay reacted badly,[202][203] Hope wished she'd prevented it.[204] Hope and Sarah had both lost all the first three rounds, so Justin told them that they would play each other in the last round.[205]
Hope decided to look at her memory of Jay as she felt that she wouldn't deserve to meet Sarah otherwise.[206] She found the memory guarded by a vision of Pandora telling her to leave it alone as it had nothing to do with her family.[207] Hope tried to open the memory but Pandora stopped her.[208] Pandora said that she lacked determination and that her feeling of obligation wasn't enough.[209] Hope declared that she wanted to make amends for Pandora's mistakes and avoid making those mistakes again in order to be a better person than Pandora.[210] Then Pandora disappeared and Hope broke through to the memory.[211]
After she had experienced her memory of Jay's past, Hope left the comic shop crying and Sarah followed her.[212] Hope hugged Sarah. Sarah realized that Hope was "Box".[213] Hope confirmed that she was formerly Pandora and told Sarah about her plan to play Magickal Gatherings with Sarah and use a special deck hinting who she is.[214] She also explained that she had wanted to talk to Sarah alone, and not Tedd or Susan, because she felt too weak to be who they expected her to be.[215] However, she had decided that she needed to talk to Jay, and she needed to talk to Tedd because keeping her secret from Tedd would put Sarah in an awkward position. Sarah told Hope that she would have things to talk about with Ellen but Hope didn't understand why.[216] Hope explained that she had little time to preserve her memories and that she had forgotten about modern technology for that reason.[217]
When Hope went back to the comic shop, she approached Jay and Susan.[218] Susan realized who Hope is when she mentioned that her name is a reference to Pandora's box. She told Jay and Susan that she wanted to talk to them after the tournament and that Susan could tell Jay who she is.[219]
In the fourth round of the Magickal Gatherings tournament Hope was paired with Sarah.[220] She soon managed to play "Kaphoglio's Mimic".[177] Sarah managed to kill Hope's dragon that was released from Kaphoglio's Mimic,[221] which, along with Sarah mentioning her own werewolves, reminded Hope of her confrontation with Ragnarok.[19]
After everyone except Sarah, Jay and Sarah's friends left the comic shop, Justin asked Hope how she made her money and Hope explained that she (Pandora) had helped paranormal investigators with treasure hunting.[222] Then Hope got nervous about talking to Sarah, Jay, Susan, Grace, Tedd and Justin, so she went to her room to put away her backpack.[223] When she came bak, Jay was confused about Hope seemingly passing through a wall, so Hope invited the others to her room with a ritual hospitality vow.[224] The talked about how the room and the hospitality vow work[225][226] before entering Hope's room.[226][227]
Then Jay asked why Hope wanted to talk to her and Hope explained how she gave Jay magic to defend herself.[227] Jay asked her to recite her memory.[228] After Hope finished reciting the memory, she said that she should have stopped the attacker herself. Jay slapped Hope on her forehead[229] and said that Hope shouldn't apologize for not sacrificing herself.[230] Jay explained that her grandfather, Arthur, had hidden her after the attack, that the attacker had been trying to avenge his son who was a magical arsonist who was killed by Arthur, and that it was suspected that the attacker had made a deal with an immortal.[231] Hope said that she thought she (Pandora) hadn't given the attacker or his son magic since their actions were too predictable and put children in danger, but admitted that she might have done similar things if the outcome was unpredictable and only put adults in danger.[232]
When Jay misspoke in a way that implied that she was in love with Susan, Hope giggled[233] and compared Jay's feelings to how she herself felt about Blaike after they first met, which made everyone embarrassed.[234]
When Jay called the others "way too damn nice", Hope noted that it described Pandora badly.[235]
Justin, who knew that Pandora had marked many people, asked Hope if she had marked him. Hope confirmed it and told him that she had additionally awakened him. She also gave Justin a spellbook.[236] As Jay had mentioned that she had copied a size change spell from a short woman (she didn't recognize Rhoda)[237] and Grace had said that she thought she knew that woman,[238] Jay asked if Hope could confirm that Grace knows her. Hope confirmed that Rhoda has size magic and also mentioned that Rhoda's girlfriend Catalina has cat magic; this made Grace and her friends shocked,[239] which made Hope confused.[240] Then Jay asked if Hope could make a spellbook for her.[241] Hope explained that a wizard's spellbook describes copied spells based on the wizard's understanding. Jay still wanted a spellbook. It took a long time and much effort for Hope to make a spellbook for Jay.[242] Hope was tired after she made Jay's spellbook.[243]
Around this time Tedd suggested that the group should wait before telling their friends about Hope, and Hope agreed because she was scared of meeting so many people.[244]
When Sarah suggested that they should go home because Hope was tired, Tedd offered to let her live at Tedd's house.[245] Hope thought she didn't deserve it[246] but still gratefully accepted the offer.[247] Sarah offered to help Hope shop for books.[248] Then Tedd mentioned that he and his father would like to ask her about the new immortal law. Hope was surprised that they didn't already know the details of the new law and said that immortals are more dangerous now.[247]
False Kings[]
On the morning after Hope's first night at the Verres' house (a Saturday), Edward Verres found her room[249] just before Hope woke up. Hope told Edward that she had given him his first spell, which summons charts.[23] She explained that she had given him the spell in order to make her son (Adrian), who was Edward's teacher at the time, notice that Edward is a wizard. Edward realized that Hope was Pandora and that Tedd had invited her.[24]
Hope explained that it had slipped her mind that Edward would be able to see the entrance of her room because it's in his house. She complained that she is stupid.[250] Grace showed up to comfort Hope.[251] Grace told that she used to be clueless since she grew up in a lab and mentioned that she is part lespuko; Hope didn't know about lespukos.[252] Tedd suggested that they go to the basement to make his father comfortable with talking about secrets, so Hope transformed her clothes into an outfit resembling Sarah's, and explained that it's easy to change that way in her room but may be harder outside.[253]
After Edward was told about Hope's refresh and why Tedd invited her to live with them, Edward realized that Hope wouldn't like living with Adrian since she would have complicated feelings about being younger than her son while remembering being older.[254] Hope told Edward, Tedd and Grace that she feels confused about who she is relative to Pandora since she is ashamed of many of her memories, as she had been overprotective of Adrian and would play callously with other people.[255] She explained that she had given people magic without telling them in order to cause accidents.[256]
Edward told her that he wouldn't have let Pandora stay at his house but he saw Hope as a different person.[257] He explained that he didn't see her as a danger but a child in need of help. Hope asked why he saw her as a child, as she considered herself more like a young adult, and he explained that, in addition to her knowledge gaps, Hope looks like a thirteen-to-fifteen-year-old, which surprised Hope.[258] Hope explained that immortals have default forms that reflect their nature.[259]
After Edward confirmed that he would let Hope stay at his house, he asked her about the new immortal law[260] and Hope told him, Tedd and Grace.[261][262]
When the catlike pet Jeremy entered her room, Hope was happy[263] and wanted to pet the cat but Jeremy fled.[264] While Hope and Edward were talking about Jeremy, the doorbell rang and Hope was severely startled.[265]
Then Edward's fiancée Lavender, who is an uryuom, entered the house, as Edward had invited her to keep Hope company while Tedd and Grace were busy studying for the high school finals.[266] Lavender at first couldn't see Hope's room but Hope revealed the room when Edward told her that Lavender is part of the household.[267] Then Hope showed Lavender the basement and its TV and computer monitors (Hope was unfamiliar with computers); Lavender told her that one of the computers is specialized for programming forms for the transformation guns.[268] Lavender also told Hope that Tedd had invented clone forms for uryuoms; hearing about Tedd's accomplishments made Hope feel useless. Then Hope noticed the mirror door.[269] Edward explained how Tedd had made it safe[270] and how it works, and said that it was originally use by Tedd's mother.[271] Hope wanted to help Tedd figure out more about the mirror in order to feel useful. Then Lavender brought up Hope's interest in TVs and Hope explained that her son likes movies and suggested that they watch Star Wars.[272]
After watching Star Wars, Hope greeted Tedd with paraphrase of a Star Wars quote.[273]
In the following days Hope watched more Star Wars movies and continued trying to approach Jeremy, and Jeremy continued fleeing from her.[274]
On Wednesday Hope uncovered the mirror door to look at its magic.[275] She was interrupted by Potestas breaking into the house. When Potestas entered the basement, Hope turned invisible.[276] As Hope sensed that the intruder was under magic but not enchanted she wondered how that could be, which enabled her to see through Potestas's projection and see her true form.[277] After Potestas took the transformation guns, she noticed Hope and smashed the monitor of the transformation programming computer.[278] Hope realized that it was a warning to her but was still angry about the intruder breaking the computer.[279] Then Jeremy attacked Potestas.[280] To stop the fight Hope turned visible with a brilliant light[281] and, when the others were dazzled, grabbed Jeremy and fled upstairs.[282]
Age[]
Due to immortals getting more powerful with age and becoming increasingly unstable in their thoughts and feelings after two centuries,[283] their age (i.e. how long it has been since their last reset) is very important.
The first indirect information about Pandora's age was that Adrian Raven has wanted to fight for centuries, and in the commentary Dan's note that he had apparently known his mother, Pandora (AKA Chaos), for hundreds of years.[2]
Later, Pandora herself said she was hundreds of years old,[1] and when Sarah directly asked her age, she said she had answered such questions with "299" for few centuries now.[3] While she could have meant it as a joke or started saying it before actually reaching 299, more probably it really means she was more than 599 years old (assuming "a few" is at least 3).
For an upper limit, we have even less to go on ... if she was more than 2000 years old, she might have said she's "thousands" of years old instead - but she may not have wanted to admit it, possibly even to herself. Or, she might have lost count.
The story about her love for Blaike[4] is intentionally vague about the century of its setting[284], although it looks more like the Middle Ages than classical antiquity.
One not-entirely-but-almost confirmed upper limit is the Late Bronze Age collapse, which happened during the 12th century BCE and is indirectly implied[285][286] to involve a magic reset. For Pandora not to remember any reset directly but just as a legacy memory from her previous incarnation[120], she must have been younger. However, the reset her previous incarnation remembers could've happened later; her description is reminiscent of the battle of Ain Jalut, which happened on 3 September 1260.
Also, the Pandora myth first appeared in lines 560–612 of Hesiod's poem in epic meter, the Theogony (c. 8th–7th centuries BC), without ever giving the woman a name. And the idea of Pandora having a box is usually attributed to the 16th century humanist Erasmus who, in his Latin account of the story of Pandora, changed the original Greek pithos (jar) to pyxis (box)[287] ... but we already know Pandora was older than THAT, implying that she was aware of the translation being incorrect but possibly uses it because it is recognized by more English speakers.
Abilities[]
Pandora's abilities have been shown to include shape-shifting,[50] and returning her son's illusion.[9] She also appeared to be able to teleport, but it could be just her going quickly through the spiritual plane. Pandora could kill people simply by willing it (though this of course broke Immortal Law). She also demonstrated the ability to hijack the connection between her and every other immortal, generated by her breaking immortal law, and use it to empower them and take control of them for a moment. On top of this, Pandora could cast a spell which cured every aberration within several miles of them, killing them. This spell did not affect Sirleck, either because he was out of range or because he was on the spiritual plane while possessing Ellen and the spell was cast on the physical plane.
Marking people[]
It is known that Pandora gave magic marks to the following people (or at least considered doing so):
- Dex (possibly) [288]
- Justin [289]
- Rhoda [290]
- Catalina [291][83]
- Tedd [98][292]
- Luke [66]
- Sarah [102]
- "Good" Tom [75]
- Kitty [91]
- Felix (most likely) [95]
- Liz (probably) [80]
Not only is this a vast majority of all known marked people in the comic (only one mark was given by someone else - the one Susan got), it's also very unusual and dangerous that she marked people without their knowledge or consent.[69] As stated above, it's possible that she used some type of loophole by giving the necessary information to people while on the spiritual plane,[66] so they couldn't actually hear her, similarly how Voltaire was using a loophole with "empowering and guiding" Dex.[287]
We also still seem to have two marks unaccounted for.[293]
Trivia[]
A part of Pandora' cloud form.
- Pandora's cloud form is said to be constantly shifting and changing, with parts splitting and combining randomly while still giving the appearance of a regular pattern of movement. Dan Shive has claimed that Pandora in her cloud form would be one of the hardest things he could think of to animate.[294]
- She had not reset in a very long time, which would explain some of her insanity.
- A Challenge Rating of 5 probably is selling Pandora's physical form short.[295]
