Summary[]

The storyline started with a montage of Susan hearing customers refer to their own views as the views of a real fan while arguing.[2] Susan wanted to discuss the matter and when someone mentioned her review show, she had an idea.[3] She called Elliot about her idea for a review show video.[4]

In the review show, when Susan announced that they were going to talk about the notion of real fans, Elliot joked about the other meaning of the word fan.[5] Then Elliot and Susan said that they were confused about what it means to be a real fan.[6] Susan said that people often impose conditions on fans to gatekeep but on the other hand she doesn't want to call people fans of something if they disagree with its core or only like to make fun of it.[7] Elliot noted that people can disagree about what the core of a show's message is but Susan said that it is sometimes very clear.[8] Elliot said that people can like a show for something other than its message, such as its aesthetics. Susan teased him about liking anime shows with busty women.[9]

Susan said that she thought being a fan means more than liking one superficial thing about the show and realized that they were unsure what fan means.[10] Elliot said that they should have looked it up before since his girlfriend Ashley is very aware that using words in different way can cause confusion.[11] Susan looked up the word fan in a dictionary which defined it as "enthusiastic devotee" or "ardent admirer or entusiast".[12] She concluded that it is possible to be enthusiastic about a show, and thus a fan, in different ways, such as liking it ironically or superficially.[13] Susan and Elliot said that people should clarify their definitions when arguing if they want good discussion but Susan noted that people are often more interested in "winning" than clarity.[14] Elliot said that he can understand why people feel defensive about being fans.[15] Then Susan said that fans shouldn't gatekeep and Elliot joked about Susan having a no-hugs list.[16] They ended the show episode by summing up what they had concluded.[17]

The episode got bad comments, including one defending gatekeeping from someone who refused to watch the episode, one complaining about Susan's political views, one making what's implied to be sexual references in response to the no-hugs list joke, and one thinking Elliot is gay. Elliot and Susan didn't read the comments.[18]

Months later someone who complained about gatekeeping was recommended the video by a friend of Susan and Elliot, agreed with the video and shared it on social media.[1]
