"The less she knows about what I know the better."
—Mrs. Kitsune[3]

Mrs. Kitsune is the mother of Nanase and Akiko and is a very strict woman. It appears she goes beyond the normal bounds to force Nanase to become the perfect, "good girl" daughter that only gets good grades at school and will eventually grow up to become a respectable housewife. However, Dan has said that her motivations are not as traditional as they appear,[4] and it is possible that she only acts stereotypical as a cover for keeping secrets about her family.

History[]

For some time Nanase dated many boys,[5] possibly because she was desperate to find a man to marry[6] since her mother wanted her to be a housewife.

On March 1, when Nanase was going to spend a night at Susan's house with Susan, Ellen and Justin, she called her mother to tell her but lied about the other people and what clothes she was wearing.[7] When Nanase realized later that evening that she was in love with Ellen, she fell into temporary despair as she thought her mother hated lesbians.[8] After Nanase spent the next night at her cousin Tedd's house after fighting Damien's men, she didn't get in trouble as her mother pretended to believe that Nanase was tutoring Tedd.[9]

On March 10, Mrs. Kitsune told off Nanase for not assigning homework to herself, saying "There are two kinds of people in the world, Nanase: good people who make things better, and bad people who make things worse".[10] Despite Nanase's good school grades, her mother complained that Nanase didn't care enough about studying. When Nanase complained that it doesn't make sense for her mother to care since she wanted Nanase to be nothing more than a housewife, her mother punished her for her lack of deference by decreeing that Nanase wouldn't have dessert[11] (however, her younger daughter Akiko later gave Nanase cookies, possibly with their mother's secret approval).[12]

Around that time, Nanase secretly used magic on every opportunity in order to get new spells[13] and when she was testing her decoy summon "Fox" on March 11, the summon let slip that it was a test while Nanase's mother heard it.[14] When Nanase revealed her clothing makeover on the next day, her mother didn't disapprove as much as Nanase had expected, though she said that she was troubled by Nanase treating it as an act of defiance.[15]

After Nanase suffered magic burnout while saving Ellen from Abraham on the next day (March 13), Mrs. Kitsune ordered Agent Cranium that Nanase must not be allowed to know that she knew about magic, and when Cranium told her that she had persuaded Nanase to keep it secret even though Nanase desperately wanted to tell her family, Nanase's mother didn't gare about Naase's feelings but remained adamant about secrecy.[3] When she entered Nanase's hospital room, she saw Nanase and Ellen kissing.[16] Nanase's mother said that it wasn't the right time to argue about Nanase's sexual orientation as she had been hurt while selflessly fighting for a friend but also that it was only a phase.[4]

On May 2, when Nanase revealed she was going on a double date with Tedd and Grace, Mrs. Kitsune was shocked to learn that Tedd had a girlfriend, and demanded to know if she was nice and committed to the relationship or just toying with him. Mrs. Kitsune is very glad that Tedd has a girlfriend, since he used to be such a shy person. She told Nanase that she had to look after her cousin, as Nanase knew more about relationships than Tedd does. Mrs. Kitsune even threatened that she would cancel pizza night if Nanase didn't promise to keep an eye on Tedd. She also expressed contempt of Nanase seeing her relationship with Ellen as more than a phase.[17]

In May Mrs. Kitsune arranged for Nanase to babysit for neighbors and friends of the family as a summer job. She told the parents who needed babysitting than Nanase is a martial artist who could defend their children.[18] On May 31, Mrs. Kitsune allowed Nanase and Ellen to babysit Akiko together. Before she left them, she talked to Nanase in Japanese, which Ellen didn't understand.[19] At that time, Nanase thought that her mother was nice (possibly meaning nicer than before Nanase came out) because she thought she was waiting out a phase and feared her reaction if Akiko turned out to be lesbian.[20]

Mrs. Kitsune allowed Nanase to go to Rhea's New Year's Eve party but forbade her from drinking alcohol at the party. Nanase accepted her conditions but admitted that she might drink some other time, which made her mother remark that Nanase had become surprisingly honest.[21] She also warned Nanase that the fame of the Meddling Teenagers might attract enemies.[22] After the party Nanase kept the fact that there had been an attack on the party secret from her mother.[23]

Sometime in January or early February, Nanase stopped keeping her hair transformed, so that it suddenly became longer and entirely red as opposed to red with black roots, in order to observe her mother's reaction to the change, but her mother didn't acknowledge anything.[24]

Relationship[]

Nanase[]

Mrs. Kitsune apparently considers keeping her knowledge about magic secret more important than Nanase's peace of mind.[3] She's either not aware how miserable she's making her ... or is aware and deliberately keeps it just above breaking point.

Mrs. Kitsune used to give Nanase the impression that she hates lesbians, which was the main reason Nanase feared the thought that she was in love with Ellen.[8] However, when Nanase was caught kissing Ellen, appeared to be accepting of her (possibly because she realized that she had ade Nanase fear her too much), though saying it was only a phase.[4] It's possible Mrs. Kitsune still drops hints she don't expect the relationship to last,[20] on the other hand maybe Nanase just misestimates her reaction again.

Mrs. Kitsune forces Nanase's nose to the grindstone with her studies, despite apparently intending her to grow up to be a housewife.[10][11]

Mrs. Kitsune thinks Nanase's abilities are ideal for babysitter[18] or homemaker.[11] That or she didn't tell her daughter what she's training her for ...

Nanase used to disguise what she was wearing from her mother by wearing large floppy clothing over the top, as her mother apparently wouldn't approve of her choice of outfits.[25] In Sister II, Nanase confessed to her about what she really wears, which made Mrs. Kitsune apparently less angry than Nanase thought she would be.[15]

Together with mentioned Dan's comment, it's obvious that Mrs. Kitsune pretends some opinions to Nanase ; however, we don't know what are her real motives and opinions, so we can't be sure how much is pretense ...

Note that the confession in Sister II was likely not completely isolated: later in Family Tree, Mrs. Kitsune notes how honest Nanase became[21] ... which means both that Nanase is hiding less from her (OR is hiding it better, but hiding less seems more likely) AND that Mrs. Kitsune noticed that as a change - meaning that she DID found at least some things Nanase was trying to hide before. (It also means that she was surprised by it enough she admitted it.)

Noriko Verres[]

Mrs. Kitsune is the sister of Tedd's mother, but it is clear that they do not get along.[26]

Tedd[]

Mrs. Kitsune sees Tedd as a vulnerable child.[17] Nanase has said that she treats Tedd like he is a sad lost puppy.[27]

Adrian Raven[]

Raven was Mrs. Kitsune least favorite teacher.[28]

Magic[]

According to Pandora, Mrs. Kitsune, like her sister, is a wizard, but unlike her has not nurtured her abilities.[29] She knows about Nanase having magic, and also about DGB.[3] She don't want Nanase to know that she knows,[3][30] presumably as part of general keeping family history secret from Nanase so that she isn't tempted to follow in her aunt Noriko's footsteps. (Also, maybe pretending to not know her daughter has magic is easier than pretending it surprises her.)
